Yep The military uses these, they are vertually indestructible.

Was $105 for the red top 75/35 at the Costco here in Vegas. There was a slight modification needed to be done on the battery tray as the positive terminal wire was not long enough to screw in with the optima in the stock position. It needed to be slid a few inches toward the headlamp. A quick cut of the tray and all is well. No more leaky AC delco battery. Kinda sucks though as the AC delco was a 72 month, but I didnt want to ruin the engine compartment with acid as it was starting to leak.

My freind at the local dealership tells me that most all of the AC delco batteries tend to start leaking from the terminals for some reason..GM has a new battery out this year and he tells me those also do the same thing. By the way this is the 2nd replacement battery under warranty thats leaking. You can check the positive terminal and check for a moist corrosion, it seems to crop up out of no where....

Too bad for me, Costco here wasn't selling Optima batteries a year earlier when I needed one.

When I installed my Optima Red Top 75/35 battery: I didn't need any modification of the battery tray. The red positive terminal reached & screwed into the Optima battery socket.

You talking about this type of battery: AC Delco Professional Platinum Battery with Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) technology (http://www.acdelco.com/html/pi_batt_plat.htm)
When I went to a GM dealer & AC Delco parts distributor asking about this battery, they thought I was on crack :stupid:  Must be not available in Canada.
Kind of like when I went asking around for AC Delco Ultraguard Gold oil filters (http://www.acdelco.com/html/pi_filt_oil_gold_main.htm)

I've heard that stock batteries (in a stock car) can last up to 5-years, before you should keep an eye for signs of the battery going.
That is assuming that you don't drain the battery down like: by listen to the stereo when the engine is off, having an alarm system (it drains the battery when the car is off), add any lighting, etc...if you ever drain the battery right down (starting batteries never like to be drained right down), it weakens them.

My stock battery only lasted me 3-years.

The Optima batteries are suppose to last longer, if you get the proper type (starting battery->Red Top, deep cycling battery->Yellow Top) for your usage.

Yes, it would help a little...assuming the battery does get charged fully by the car's alternator most of the time.
I would recommend getting a Optima Yellow Top D34/78 (http://www.optimabatteries.com/products/pdf/D34_78.pdf) (it might need work to fit into your stock battery tray/car)...next time you want/need a new battery.

Some people also say try (if you don't want to spend the money on a Optima battery):
If you are looking for a deep cycle battery -> Sears Die Hard deep cycle battery (as long as it has enough cold cranking amps rating).

or

If you are looking for a starting battery -> try an Interstate battery or a Sears Die Hard starting battery.

just gonna bring this thread back to life.

i am in need of a good battery. as stupid as it sounds, can i put a blue top battery into my car. i am only running 2 10inch subs with a 200 watt amp. if it works, then good, cause it will match my engine bay, if not i will get a red top. i want my stuff to work first, before it looks pretty.

Sam's Club that just recently opened:

Optima Red Top starter battery 75/35 @ about $126Cdn

Optima Yellow Top deep cycle battery 34/78 @ about $200Cdn

But you do need a $45 yearly membership (kind of like Costco) to shop there.

They also carry Mobil 1 5W30 & 10W30 motor oil in boxes of 6x1L bottles @ $39.96Cdn.
(I wish Costco would carry Mobil 1 oil, since I have a membership there instead that is near my home :( )

I think their regular price is around $200Cdn.

FYI Wal-Mart also carries Optima batteries now in Canada. IIRC the RedTop is about 135$CAD.

Might help those with no access to Costco ;)

I just picked-up from Costco:

Another Optima Red Top 75/35 size battery for $121.39Cdn.

[My dad needs a 'new' car battery, so he is getting my old Optima Red Top.]

optima batteries now have plastic to covers that cover the top mounts. they are paintable. i have had the yellow top under the hood for 3 years now and no problems. my alt went out and was able to drive around on just battery power for 1 full day, didnt die till next morning while i was going to shop to get fixed. and now i have 2 yellow tops in the back for the amps. i live by them. my .02 cents
