Changing to a Shifter to Manual Style

Hello
I was wondering if anyone knows how the shifting thing works on our cars. i know we have a button, but how is it activated. is the actual button just pushed down or how does it work? I was thinking if its just a down rod in the middle of the shfter then why can't i just put a manual knob on there and just make it so that rod is always pushed down? If anyone knows or has any pics let me know

You could jam the cable that operates the button so that it is always disengaged, but it would make it awfully easy to accidentally bump the car into reverse/park.

You would also be able to take the car out of park when the keys were out of the ignition.

thanks man. i was doing down the hill once and was going about 50km and i was holding the shifter..and for some reason bumped it into reverse...and nothign happened..i think there is protection on there of some kind against that stuff

probably bumped it into neutral.. Supposed to do that..
