You will get a lot of wheel well rubbing. I am 95% sure they will not fit.

Well I believe there was a guy who had an Orange GA w/20's. I believe you have to take out the wheel well lining, and probably a lot more modifying. It's not going to be an easy task I wouldn't think.

well i do know 20's will fit... there are 2 guys that have 20's already on their GA's that i kno of... i was thinking if i just take the wheel lining out they will fit... my car isn't dropped yet

I think you're still going to have an issue with the tire rubbing when you turn the wheel. I'm not positive but I believe I've heard people talking about it. Have you tried a search yet? I think this may have been discussed before.

I was talking to a guy at an import shop, and for the record 20s will fit. But with 20s your not going to keep the same stock wheel diameter, which is going to create problems for you. I am not sure if it will happen on the GA, but I have heard of cases where people went with bigger wheels on automatic transmittion cars and blew there tranny because of it. Something having to do with the computer and the shift points are sometimes based on speed. Thus with such a large wheel your going to throw the speedometer off and thus the shift points as well.
This is just what I heard, I am not saying its true.
I know JET makes a module that can adjust the speedometer when you go bigger, which may solve that problem, but I am not sure its really worth it!

this is correct. I was told the same thing. This is why I decided not to go larger than 18's.

so funny j@ckass... jk wit ya man
i can be a baller on 18's.... i was looking at the 20's on the GA's and they dont fit right...

if you can fit 19's and 20's on a 3rd gen RX7 you can fit them on a GA. They fit so long as you have an appropriate offset, tire size and remove the fenderwells.
But IMO....they're pointless (and gay). You'd be rolling on rubber bands that would ride like sh!t and be sensitive to damage.

you need alot of modification - hard modification, expensive modification.
20's DO fit, but it takes time.
If you search around the "other site" for orangedelight (i think that's his name) you can see what it took to modify.

his name is "phatazzgrandam"
..and the car is no more.

to fit 20s you have to bend up the perch on the srut where the spring sits (just don't bend it too much so it hits the spring), and as long as the width and backspacing work you won't have TOO much wheel rubbing when you turn. don't listen to naysayers.
Watch4MyBu

20 is too big. In the spring I wil lhopefully be rollin' on 19 and tha tis more than enough. With 235/35 series tires and a very hih offset like 42 or 45 i should have no problems

DOES ANYBODY UNDERSTAND THAT WHEN YOU GO WITH A BIGGER WHEEL, YOU GO WITH A SMALLER PROFILE TIRE! I HAVE 19" WHEELS ON MY GRAND AM AND INTRAX SPRINGS, AND I HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM!! THE OVERALL DIAMETER OF THE PACKAGE DOES'NT CHANGE DRASTIC ENOUGH TO THROW YOUR TRANNY OUT, OR THROW YOUR SPEED OFF ENOUGH TO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE, IMO IF YOU GET A 30 OR 35 SERIES TIRE ON 20"WHEELS (WITH THE RIGHT OFFSET) YOU SHOULD'NT HAVE TO MAKE ANY MAJOR ALTERCATIONS:thumbs:

I'm glad I am not the only one that can figure this out. However, my posts seem to get deleted when I say things like this adimently. Some people must like rehashing the same things over and over.
BTW matt, running a 30 series tire on a 20" rim isn't the simple answer, but for normal size rims (18, maybe 19 and smaller) your idea is correct barring a few other noticeables. The smallest 20" tire I found was a 245/35/20...which wouldn't fit in the wheel housing simply. Also, you have to remember a 20" rim is probably at least 10" wide...another situation where you just simply cannot change the aspect ratio.

Regarding the transmission issue, the added weight of the wheels probably has the most detrimental effect. Also, what Bob said is another big problem...most 20's aren't thin enough to tuck under our wheel wells...:(

true, true:D you got a point there amraam4, but, i don't know if 19's and 20's are "gay", i'd rather have 18 inch rims, but i got one heck of a deal on the 19's paid 600 for wheels and new toyo proxes plus i sold the stockers for 500 with bad tires, so in essence i got them for 100 bucks, when i was in need of buying new tires anyway!!
FYI: THE RUBBER BAND TIRES RIDE GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!;)

All my comments were directed toward was 20" rims on a GA, Particularly blingbling "baller" style. 20's on a large vehicle is fine.

Ok this i know 20 in will only fit in the back with some customizing
as for 19 are nice but will rub a little up front.

20s can be fit in the front, too.

reason i ask is that 20 dont come in 7.5 in rim with.
and how are u going to get them to fit under the strut plate cover....

the perch where the spring mounts has to be bent upwards; i don't know if you saw my other post, but i mentioned that in there. and they will rub at full turn, but it can work. i've seen it with my own eyes.

I Have Seen it Too!!!! BLING BLING, Dolla Dolla BIlls Ya'll, Baller status dubs on a GA.
Honestly, I think it is gay, especially baller rims. It's like riding on wheels, there are hardly any tires there that you can see.

I have seen 20" wheels in 8" widths only like 2 rims though.. cuz most of them come in minimum of 8.5" widths. If you look.. its out there.

well ima go baller status in 19;s after i get me wrecked cleared up... do i have to do anything speical fo those?
jordanGT
03-13-2003, 10:10 AM
depends on width and backspacing. i think as far as the height goes, if you go with like a 235/35/19 you're still close to stock diameter.

k... i kno i change my mind every week... but i really wanted 20's but i dont have the extra money to mod my car to fit the wheels... so i plan on gettin 19's Gunmetal.... so they need to be 19x8 5x114.3 or 5x115, and the tires can i do 225/35/19? help! thanks
AMRAAM4
03-13-2003, 01:42 PM
yes, 225/35/19. If you go 235/45/19 you'll rub.
offset 38-40mm I would say

Just want to let u know that IF u get 19's u might want to get 1 or 2 extra tires.... 19in are not a really popular size.
But dont let that keep ya from what u want.
Now for tire size i would look at 235-35-19 , u cant get a 235/45/19 to fit ....
hope it works out for ya.
OH make sure u get hubcentric and tuner luggs , MOST rims need this ....
AMRAAM4
03-13-2003, 05:31 PM
tuner lugs on a 114.3 bolt pattern are not a good idea for most applications, seeing we have 115 bolt pattern and are trying to compensate.
Aleromi is correct, you can't get a 235/45/19 to work because that size tire isn't made...I came up with that via calculation. As for 225/35/19...not many tire manu's make that too, so remember that.
IMHO, I think you should just stick with 18's
2002GT
03-13-2003, 05:37 PM
aww man... 18's... lol... i wanted to put on my license plate
JR DUBS ... lol... 18's are fine but i dunno... ahh... rims can make or break my car.. i guess thats why i am being so annoying about this

I am going with 19's but I am going for lightweight 19's. 19's just look so much better especially with lowering springs. I just need to find tire weights. Anybody know any good sites that list the weights of different tire sizes

trust me, an 18 wheel with a 225/40/18 tire has a pretty tiny sidewall...I have had a couple people ask me in parking lots or so if I had a flat tire because the contact patch sidewall is quite small. Plus, you gotta always check your tire pressure with 18's, you DON'T wann arun low pressure.

THATS SO true !!!!!!!!! I have 18's QT rim's on 225/40/18 toyo FZ4 rubber, and i just pulled out my ALERO and the tires need a little air..........
Now as for the tuner lug i was talking about , the are called SPLINE DRIVE lugs , These are the best F*** lugs i ever use....
They get more bite on the stud then any lug out there... Plus they are a great theaf de-turent ....
also the 114.3 is stock numbers, most aftermarket rims will do a 5x115 bolt pattern and in most cases HUBcentric's will be needed.
Now a good tire shop will tell u when and if u need this stuff..
if they dont that just some **** por sevice.

Look harder... they do make 20" wheels by 8" wide. But only like 2 companies make them.. so really rare.. but its out there. Therefore no customizing needs to be done.. period. unless ya go with the 8.5 then ya.

i think i'm the ONLY person on here with an 8.5 inch width. and it's a really tight fit; i got lucky with the backspacking and offset.
also, the main problem with the 20s isn't their width, it's the height. you're not going to find a 20 inch tire with the same overall diameter as stock, so the added height puts your tires into conflict with the spring perch on the strut. get under your car and look; you'll see what I mean. if the stock tire were taller, it would hit...

They must keep their roads in better condition there than they do here.
Word to the wise, don't expect roads to be the same smoothness in other states. There is a world of difference just going from Texas...nice and smooth to Oklahoma....horrible
