one of my friends gave me a 7872 alpine deck. I was like cool. But anyway, if I get the adaptor for the steering wheel controll to work, will it still work? B/c one of my friend said that I need to have a remote with the deck to work? So what do I do?

Is this the model your refering to ==>Alpine<== (http://store.yahoo.com/discountsonline/alcde7incdpl.html) if so, I'm afraid your friends right. Unless someones come out with some new development I have'nt heard of, without a built-in eye for a remote or an auxillary remote plug found on the back of select Alpines (like this one (http://store.yahoo.com/discountsonline/alcdadindasp.html)), your steering wheel controls will be useless.

To start off, there is an adapter that wires into the 3 WIRE steering wheel remote. It functions like a programmable home (4in1 etc) learning remote, you hit the function on the wheel then you hold down the button on your aftermarket remote aiming it at an eye on the interface box untill the light blinks or beeps etc, then once installed there will be a little bud like a umm tick after a full meal (sorry can't think of anything better to describe) on a wire that gets placed near the iR receiver for your head unit.

The "future steering wheel remote" the alpine mentions is only a add-on ir remote that straps on the steering wheel, not an interface.

Unless I'm badly mistaken, if the HU doesnt come with an option for IR remote, the 3 wire interface your refering to can't be used. If the HU has no IR eye an IR remote unit will not work. It would be like trying to use my TV remote on my computer monitor.

And the Alpine I was refering to has an interface that plugs in to the rear not through IR. It hard wired in to and works with GM/Chysler steering wheel controls NOT an add-on remote. The interface also works with IR like the 3 wire mentioned above, but in select Alpines it plugs in directly to the back.
