I am looking into buying a 2003 Cavalier LS sport 5-speed 2 door. They have the ecotec right? How good is the engine? Will the cavilair have as many problems as the grand am? How fast is it. What should I espect as a 1/4 mile stock. I think it looks pretty nice and it is yellow. What do you guys think?

Just my Opinion. Why not buy like a used GTP for a WHOLE lot less and run faster than that Cavalier LS sport 5-speed 2 door ever could dream.

How fast is it, uhhh, its pretty damn slow.

Well, I am getting it from an auction and it will probably cost me like around 4-5 grand. So, I don't think you can get a GTP for that much. Come on guys, I really need a stock 1/4 mile time. Is it as fast as a z24? Or close too.

Stock for stock its a tad slower than the older Z24. They run low 16s stock but respond really well to mods and the ecotec is VERY durable, Lingenfelters 1,060hp Cavy was basically on stock bottom end.

From an honest opinion here, my sis has a 2003 cavalier and its really a great car, the car has excellent power and the 4-speed auto shifts smooth as can be. It almost feels like the GA, the only drawback I could really find was that when you take off when the engine is cold its kinda loud if you dont let it heat up. Oh and doesnt the cav. have the same powertrain as the 2003 GA SE anyways?

Yeah, its too cheap. As in non-existant. I'm buying '01s right now for 6,500 or so...'03s haven't even hit the auctions yet!

But what do I know...I only go to auctions every week

That was what I was going to say. Something is VERY fishy here.

As far as reliability, I owned a 1996 Cavalier. It was a pretty good car. The real reason I traded it in was to get more power and more leg room. I'm 6' tall and my legs used to cramp up going to work. I had a few problems with the car, including a lot of stuff replaced under warranty. When the warranty was up, I traded it in. The GA has been much more reliable. The Cav is really old technology, except for the Eco engine. But for the money, I remember the Cav being a good value for what you get.

I ran against a 2 door at the track with ackbar00 and this modified Cavalier ran a 16.6 to my 15.3 in the lane next to him. Their quite a bit slower. I believe his was a 5 speed as well. Of course, the big wing on the back probably slowed him down.

It is true, if you go to savage auctions you can get cars very cheap. And I am estemaiting it to go for a coupel grand and then repair. My brother bought a 2001 cavalier with the rksport body kit and hood for like 2,300, and after fix and everything it was around 4 grand. I don't know if I am going to go bid on it after what you guys said.

DAMN!!! You jumped in with what I wanted to say first.

Wait untill GM actually does something to the Cavalier, it is still the same old thing from the early 90's with a different/weaker engine under the hood.

If you really want a cavalier that bad, what till someone drives one off of the lot brand new about 2 blocks down the road, then offer then 1/2 what they paid, well.... the seller would be getting a killer deal, try offering just 1/3 what they paid to be fair to yourslef. (terrible, terrible, terrible, terribe re-sale)

Better yet look for a used GTP or even a used Saab.

ive got a 2002 cavy ls sport coupe (just b4 they got even uglier!!) with an ecotec. IT DOES NOT EVEN COMPARE IN ANY WAY TO THE GRAND AM!!!
The ecotec COULD BE a very good engine. IT does have potential, BUT.... almost no one has parts for it currently.(just intake/exhaust) It does have super strong internals and can handle alot (700hp i think) b4 the internals start to brek up. But EVERYTHING would have to be custom made. .
.
.
.In STOCK form-IT SUX!!! Acceleration-crap/
0-60-crap/1/4 mile-crapand a half/ UNCOMFORTABLE AS HELL/ALL Kinds of little problems(most of wich are still there for the 03's) It's NEARLY impossible to even break the tires loose.!AND THEY HAVE ABOUT A 10 CENT RESALE VALUE!
i also had a 2000 z24 with the 2.4L......NOT A WHOLE LOT BETTER!!!(but MUCHO aftermarket support on that motor!)

IF I had to do it again...I would have bought a Donkey! (at least they can make u laugh!)

my buddies 02 z24 has some nice giddy up. he can spin them whenever he wants. not like its something to be proud of, but his car has a nice go to it.

i believe from what i have heard and seen, there are some 02 z24's, which imo, look pretty good. shinny wheels and 2.4 (mucho aftermarket). my biggest beef with the cavi's are the bland interior, but i guess some could say the same about our cars.

they exist - but not many. they stopped making 2.4 cavaliers AND dropped the Z24 name (in the us NOT Canada) in early 2002 production. my 02 was one of the first ls sport coupes(z24 replacement:( ). My ecotec is old compared to most (again of the 2.2 US version not any of the opel's or anything) In my opinion this being about my 6th or so cavy(mostyly 80's-90's+00 z24 and current 02 ls sc). It definatly looks better(in stock form) than any other year cavy.anyway if you can get such good deals at this auction or whatever id still get something other than a crapalier

Bottom line, everyone is saying don't waste your money on a new Cavalier.

The ecotech might be a good engine but in stock form it blows. I'd rather ride a bicycle its probably faster in the 1/4 than a cavy they just dont have any balls to get up and go.

The best years for the J body (IMO) were 1995-99. I owned a 1995 Z24 (very moddified with a blueprinted 2.3 HO Quad 4 220 hp) and a 1999 Z24 (my wifes). My Z24 did mid 14's with 90 degree weather, and it had a lot of potential. That engine is now sitting at my Uncles garage back in Ohio. :(

Cavaliers aren't the most reliable car out there. Fit and finish is not that great (compared to a Honda Civic). BUT for decent transportation they are okay.

I can't stand the look of the new Cavalier. Yuck! I agree with everyone else. There are better cars out there.

The 03's look good with the Razzi kit.
