So I'm heading off to another day of teaching 5th grade and I throw my car into reverse and I hear "Snap, Clunk," and my car's front end drops.

I didn't even get out of the garage.

Then I'm trying to look underneath without getting dirty, no luck. I then jacked it up on the driver's side where it dropped and I hear scrapping metal. Ouch!

Sure enough, the spring had snapped.

So here's my quandary:
Cole Muffler (a chain shop) quoted me $400 for the front springs and struts. I see no reason to do the back right now, although I do get a pretty good sqeak. I have to have both springs done or the car would ride uneven, and I'm thinking I might as well get the struts done, since I'm almost at 60K.

When I called a very good local garage, they couldn't find aftermarket springs for a 99-up Grand Ams. I'm guessing that's because springs aren't supposed to break, so why should anyone make them. I'm then wondering where Cole is getting the springs they quoted. From a dealer?

My only other option besides new springs is getting a pair of springs pulled off a car at a recycling yard.

Should I go used or new?

Mike

if you dont want performance springs, i would go used. no point in spendin the big buccz if you arent gonna be pushin em. as far as aftermarket springs, some people on the board i think are in the process of trying springs for a honda accord... supposedly all the suspension parts on our cars and honda accords may be interchangeable

That's right, there are four companies who make aftermarket springs, eibach and H&R being the best IMO. A set of after market springs would cost about the same as a set of stock springs, but you would have to change all four. If you're not interested in performance springs just get the one spring replaced. If it's a stock spring it should not ride uneven. Whoever told you that is trying to sell you some extra springs and struts;) . You shouldn't need new struts either at 60k miles unless you are rediculously hard on your car.
