In the Toronto area Canadian Tire flyer this week (March 29 to April 4, 2003).

There is an after-market, hand held OBD II code reader on sale for $149.99Cdn (Reg. $249.99Cdn).
Innova 3100 OBD II Code Reader (http://www.iEQUUS.com/3100.asp?CatShort=3100)

Anyone have that (or a similar) unit?
Is it worth it to have?

Whoops, a typo :p

see: Innova 3100 OBD II Code Reader (http://www.iEQUUS.com/3100.asp?CatShort=3100)

from Haynes Repair Manual:
OBD II is a 'On-Board Diagnostic system consisting of an on board computer (P.C.M.), sensors, & output actuators.
THe PCM is specifically calibrated to optimize the emmissions, fuel economy & driveablitiy of the car.
If anything is really abnormal that it monitors, it logs it in the computer & turns on the Service Engine Soon light on.

A reader gets the what code is stored. Having the code, you look-up what it means (for ex: P0301 = cylinder #1 misfire detected).

I went to Canadian Tire today, it was sold out yesterday (I had to work yesterday) in the south-west end of Toronto & south-east end of Mississauga :(

I got a rain check for that price for a month; next week Sunday, the one I visited will have 8 units ordered in.
I was the 2nd person that asked for a rain check on it. Hopefully they don't get more than 8 people trying to claim their rain checks next Sunday (as it is on a first come basis).

yeah they're hard to find.
I had to go across the city to find it. (another district actually)
Eh I hope it's worth it since the last 2 times I had the light come on the comp thought the gas cap was messed....

GrrrlPower,

Sorry, I can't.

Still waiting for the Cdn Tire store I visited to get their order in :(
They might get some stock in at end of this week.

Have you checked that all your exterior lights are working (including the high beams, that are used for the DRL's) ?

I just used it to erase a code and turn off that damn light.
YAY!
It was a small evap leak which I've been getting intermittently for the last few months. every time I go in they say gas cap... so unless it becomes more frequent or regular I'll leave it at that.
seems to happen every 4th or 5th time within 2 days of filling up so it sounds about right.
having the power to turn off that light... wow... =)

Rogue9: Your lucky you got one.
How do you like it? Any negatives about it (besides the price)?

I'm still waiting to claim/use my 'Rain Check' at Cdn Tire.

Cdn Tire store now say: that the code readers are back-ordered from the manufacturer until about June 20,'03 :(
(Kind of like when I prepaid ordered my Haynes manual when it was on sale at Cdn Tire -> it came-in like a month later from the manufacturer. At least this time I didn't have to be prepay, to get a rain check.)

At the manufacturer's website: if you want to buy one -> says it is back-ordered.

so far I've had nothing but good experience with it.
I've determined my small evap system leak (u know the one they say tightening the gas cap will fix) is a real leak because it goes off within a day of me erasing the code and clearing the light.
so every couple of days I reset the light.
no big deal takes literally 10 seconds.
but I Gotta get it fixed...

so yes it's been insanely handy and I know it's not too major a problem and can wait until I have time to fix it.
it works on all the cars in my family (newer ones anyway) so it's a big bonus for whatever may come up.

so I'd say completely worth it.
I keep it in the trunk for now until I fix this damn leak heh.

This time at $199.99Cdn (Reg. $249.99Cdn) at Canadian Tire until Friday, July 4, 2003.

online at: http://www.canadiantire.ca or by Telephone 1-866-746-7287

If shopping in-person: If the store does not have any, you can get a 'rain-check' until they receive more stock.

Rogue9: Any idea what the recessed button in the middle is for? Looks like a reset button that you can press with a pen.

It doesn't read SVS codes just SES... It's like codes from the car's kidnea vs. codes from its brain

Just want to bring a second option to the table. If you have a laptop you can get OBD 2 Scanning software and a cable fro about 130USD shipped. My buddy got it and its a great tool, It reads just about everything the PCM does, Knock, Advance EGR, Speed, RPM, Codes, its a great TS tool. I'll get the site for you if you want.

Its pretty much a data logger.
