I attended the AMS Dyno Day down in Arlington Hights IL. AMS specializes in DSM's and they have a pretty nice Dynojet setup. They were running a special for the first Dyno Day this year. It was $50 for 3 pulls so I couldn't pass that up. There was a Galant VR-4 that pulled 390hp to the wheels. My friends GSX pulled 305hp. The highest figure of the day came from a 1G Eclipse with 630hp. A corvette Z-06 with intake and exhaust pulled 345 to the wheels. Well here is what the Grand AM did:

147hp with SLP Exhaust
155.4 hp with SLP Exhaust and without Airbox

I will post my RPM and Torque figures later on. I am at work and don't have the sheets with me.

I guess that shows how restrictive the stock air box is huh. All those baffles and corners to turn. Good results from the SLP exhaust too. I had my car dyno'd when it was almost stock so I could tell how much difference my performance parts made. With only a K&N filter it made 142whp. If the SLP made 5hp up from that it should be making a really good jump at the crank for an exhaust. I've always thought it was a great exhaust.:D

Thats cool that they got a AWD. dyno. Not many of those around

Must be a pretty nice shop as well to be able to afford that dyno! When I was looking into dynos a few months back, got a quote of ~$67,000 for the AWD Dynojet setup. Would be nice to have, but just not sure if the extra cost would be worth it for the limited applications that would use it all.

But to comment on your numbers... looks good. If you do a conversion of Aaron's stock 142 @ the wheels and 175 rated @ the crank, then your highest reading results in ~192hp at the crank.

Quick question, what other dynoshops are around the Chicago area?? Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

I know you can go to the DynoJet website and do a search for registered shops using DynoJet dynos. That will at least give you an idea of some of the ones around your area.

Actually AMS does not have a AWD dyno. You would think they would since most of the cars they dyno are AWD. It is just a 2-wheel dyno. They convert all the AWD cars to 2WD.

Bszopi,

What conmversion do you use to get the crank numbers?? i.e. How did you come up with 192 at the crank? Just curious....

it is just a quick scaling of the figures

142/155=175/x

solve for x

Here are my dyno sheets. Some of the line is missing since they didn't get a good reading from the ignition... This one is stock except for SLP and just the stock airbox and air filter without the Ram Air crap

This is with the SLP and open Mass-Air. A nice difference!

I thought stock GT's were running around 175 hp.. whats with this 140 busniess.. that doesnt sound right. I have read alot of people's posts saying a CAI and SLP will put you around 200hp on a GT.. 147??

My car was chassis dyno'd not engine dyno'd. The stock rating is 175hp at the engine and not at the wheels. That is why the hp figure is lower than you are thinking. So yea it would turn out to be around 200hp at the crank!

An estimate to get an idea of what you would expect to see on wheel horsepower is:

[Crank HP (otherwise known as advertised HP)] - Crank HP X .2 = Wheel HP

Also remember that:

HP = torque (in ft/lbs) * RPM (engine speed) / 5252

This is important because if you have a real sharp torque curve HP is less meaningful. We have very flat torque curves so our HP numbers are never all that impressive. In a sense the best way to describe it is, we make better use of the RPM band than many cars.

I hope I got that right.

alright, thanks... I knew it was something like that. When people say they have x amount of hp, they are usually talking crank hp though.. right?

Eh depends on situations.... When bragging they say "I have x amount of hp" and they mean at the crank, but before a race if a guy is trying to be overly modest he'll say "I've got x amount of hp" and he means at the wheels...

yeah, makes sense.. but do most people know the crank hp, and the at the wheel hp?.... I dont know my at the wheel hp.

not unless you take it to a dyno. dyno's are the only way to really know that stuff...you can assume depending on what others have done/what they've dyno'd at. You can assume since you're all stock+K&N you're like 175-178 wheel hp...but ya never know. Lots goes into it other than mods....plugs/wires....tires....tranny....I could keep going.

yeah.. thanks. I wanna get my car dinoed before and after my mods. I definatley want to see the hp gain.

When you get a dyno it measures torque while you spin your wheels on rollers and uses the formula that I posted before to get HP. So as a general rule you normally know your wheel HP if you got it dyno'ed.

HOWEVER, there are a few places that can do crank torque pulls so this means that they get that crank HP.

As a general rule most ppl will say "I have X HP at the wheels" or " I have X RWHP" (for ppl w/ rear wheel drive).

So when bragging most people add an extra 20% HP to their wheel numbers. I think it common for the GAGT's to use 22% for a correction factor.

I think you mean 175-178 Crank HPwith a K&N... :D

Not to jack this post or anything but.....

CDW00GT.....didn't I race you on hwy. 100 a while back. I don't know if you remember me or not. I had the black Z-24. That was one hell of a race! I guess it just goes to show ya how much weight plays a role in how fast a car is! :)

Hmmm not sure... I don't know if you saw my plates but they say "MY SLO CR" if you remember seeing that, then it was probably me.
