View Full Version : TUrbo Project Finally done.
Found the camera. Some of these are old and I took them along the way.
First one is the car stripped down ready to go.

Heres one of the turbo off the car.

Heres the mani and turbo mounted.

Car runs good. Pulls goods for only 6 psi. I plan to bump it up to 8 after some more fuel mods. I think its probably around 190 whp right now. I think its the first 99+ turbo 2.4L but I could be wrong. Lots of work and money went into it and I'm glad to get it done. :) It also feels good knowing that I did something like this on my own. Gonna get some video by the end of the week and dyno it soon to see where my a/f is at. DO I qualify as a boost brother now ;) Any questions feel free to ask.
And heres the finished product. Still need to paint one pipe though.

Congrats Doug, nice work and determination. I only wish I had have the mechanical skills that it took to make that!!
I need a new fuel pump, injectors and most likely gonna get a S-AFC. I'd bump it up right now but with the 12:1 FMU the fuel pressure will get really high and the stock injector cut out at around 105 psi. Once I get injectors and a lower ratio FMU I'll run 8-9 psi. :)

You picked a good car to learn them on. Cause you'll need them on that rotary :)
hmm maybe if I put some stickers on the turbo I'll get more replies. Just joking guys :) :D

Damn bro good job:thumbs:
Did you change any internals?
No, No need to untill I hit 250-260 whp :) I'll eventually to pistons/rods and 400 whp is possible. Not on the tranny of course.

What kind of turbo is it Doug? Turbonetics? Do you have a FMIC as well?
I think you need to put a couple 12" stickers of the turbo company on your front doors lol
On the third from the last pic you can see the FMIC. You might have to turn the brightness up. Its dark on some computers. THe actual turbo is a Garrett Airesearch.
I'll get Dougs Custom Turbos on the side lol.

Yeah, some of us haven't seen this thing yet!
What did you do for the ECU? I am having problems getting answers from anyone anywhere regarding repropramming or available chips, especially that would support boost. :(
The ECU is stock. I'm just usinf checks valves so it think everything is fine. I'll work on the pics. My friends ftp must have went down.

i just saw this now doug  omg, that thing has turned into a BEAST. i just have two questions for you...
1) can you snap some more pics?
2) are you going to the picnic so i can see it in person?
great job! looks really clean and pro. i'm glad you went out and did this on your own. it's risky boosting your car like this but i'm sure you love it now that it's all done  let me know when you get dyno numbers and track times!
ps- not only do our cars look alike but now we both are boosted 2.4's :D

Freakin' sweet dude! Off course you qualify as a boost bro now. Any kind of positive manifold pressure and your in.;) Looks really nice too. About the check vavle, couldn't you upgrade to a higher BAR MAP sensor that would read the boost, or would your computer freak out? Not really knowledgable about the 2.4 ya know. Anyway it'll be cool to see what you run when you get the fuel straightened out and can turn up the boost. Great work.
I'll try and snap some more pics. Crazy time here at work. (Memorial Tourn) 2 /3 BAR sensor will not work without a reprogram.

sweeeeeeeeeeeet!!!
i want to do a turbo to my 97 ga gt. its the 2.4L also. right now it is getting a brand new engine put in cuz the old one had such high mileage it blew up... heh. but as soon as my new engine gets put in, im getting a short throw shift kit, then doing all the little things like exhaust and what not. THEN, i will look back at your godliness and do a turbo :D

very nice looking, 2 thumbs up
Shouldn't making your own turbo kit put you in some sort of elite class higher than a boost brother, I mean, that takes some actual work, not just money alone.
Kits getting revamped. I got a new manifold and I'm making the new downpipe right now. New IC piping also. I will take some more pics. You can see the turbo alot better with the new manifold. :)
SpyhunteR
06-09-2003, 10:30 AM
what manifold are you going with?
I went from the exploited header to the exploited log mani. The gain from using a header was negated by the crappy dp I had to make. With the log theres much more room.
Heres a good pic of the new header. And heres my new dp ready to be fully welded.

so whatchya doin w/ the header big boy?

Hey from what I heard for every decal you add you gain 5 - 10hp...of course it all depends on the size, weight, and especially the color of it.
Also, NOS seat covers shave a half second off your quarter mile time.
Hahah, nice job with the turbo man.

I'm green with envy..
did you do or have all teh piping done custom?
what else (fuel management etc did you do?
Um this thread is really old.....things have changed on this project I believe.

Yeah there is........I believe the wisdom to be instilled by this thread is....."Buy a real car and stop trying to make a POS Grand Am a really fast car."
I still have most of the stuff and it is still for sale.
