View Full Version : SE Transmission in a GT??

well, first of all, will it fit? If so, will the 3.05 help or hurt the OVERALL performance and drivability of the car. Would I even feel a difference? How would it affect 1/4 times. I may have to have some major transmission work done and it would probably be cheaper to get a used one (I can get one for $400 through a salvage yard near me) So I could pick between an SE or GT.
Will there be any computer related problems? Please give me any and all thoughts you have about this.

I'm sure it will fit. The 4T45-E and the 4T40-E are exactly the same except for the final drive ratio. The lower 3.05 in the SE improves gas milage but hurts acceleration, so I'd stick with the 3.29 in the GT. Besides, if you switched trannies, you'd have to get the computer re-flashed with an SE program to account for the different drive ratio, and the SE program has a less agressive engine tune and shift patterns.

3.4 transmissions are the same except for the final drive enternal. What will not fit is what AaronGTR said as to puting in a transmission from a 5 speed GA.

From a mechanical standpoint, it'll bolt in just fine. The problem is with the final drive ratio (as someone else eluded to). The computer will need to be re-programmed for proper shift points because of the slightly taller (numerically lower) gearing. You will probably lose a tad of grunt at the low end, but you'll be running a bit faster up top.

 Umm... the 5 speed tranny that comes with the 2.4L in the SE is a getrag M86. The 4T40-E is a 4 speed automatic.

No sweat man. If you ever need more of that kind of info, check out n-body.net in the "specs" section. Lots of useful info there.:)

Yanno, I was going to start a new thread, but I decided not to, and just attach onto this one. How hard and expensive would it be to somehow install a E-shift on our cars? Like the systems Lincoln LS's, Lexus's, and other high end-luxury cars have, with the simple Formula 1 style forward/backward shift option among a automatic? That would be hella cool to have that on our cars.

if you want to up you Final drive ratio put on smaller tires that will do it. you can put 17's on with 40's and still have a smaller wheel than our 16's with 55's but 17's will weigh more i would just put lower pro tires on the stock 16's or go out and find 114 15's. this will kill your MPG but you can get the tires to light up easyer (providing your setup weighs less)
