Last night I met my step bro on the way back to my house and he passed me in his 93 Ford Probe GT so I begun to catch up with him and I either hit 105 or 107 and the governor kicked in and slowed my car down. Anyways, does anyone know how to turn that off or to disconnect it. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks

No kidding...I thought that there were people on here claiming they had done 130?? I thought the GTs did not have a limiter.
As for this ASE chip, do you mean a programmer?

All 99+ regardless of SE/GT have one. You can hit 130+ in the GT. Put the tranny in '3' and just go. Speed limiter only catches you in 4th, so in 3rd you will climb all the way to the rev limiter (5800rpm), which is about 130-133, depending on other conditions.

does this apply to a 96. i topped mine off at 105, and i was upset. if it doesnt work, is there a govenor i can take off or a chip i can buy ?

Pre-99 GA's and all SE's have a 105 speed limiter. 99 and up GAGT's have a 130 speed limiter. Doesn't matter what gear your in either (3rd or 4th, I've done it both ways). The new ECM program I'm getting from DHP soon will eliminate it, and the ASE program does as well. I'm estimating I'll hit 150 (before wind drag stops me) because of how hard the car was pulling when it hit 130. After that I'll need more power and some more aerodynamic enhancements to overcome the drag.
Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I'd like to say this is not a good thing to do on a public road. Very dangerous and very illegal ;) . I have a special place I do this (but I'm not telling where:p ). If you're ever going to go that fast though, I highly recommend having a lowered/modified suspension, and some high speed rated tires. You don't want a blow out at 130+ mph in a car with no rollcage (or any car for that matter).:)

well, the way i see it, theres definetly something holding my engine back from its top end. it hit 105 at 4300 rpms. do you think that is a govenor or the computer.....or maybe both?

The speed limiter is part of the program in the computer, and if you have a pre-99 GT, then that's definately it. So the answer to your question is "yes".:)

To the contrary, at least in my '01, there is a 100% repeatable difference. Fuel shuts down consistently at 117-118 in 4th gear, WELL before engine rev-limiter of 5800. Drop it into 3rd, I can hit 133 everytime before it shuts down (@5800), and it will pick back up as soon as the revs drop a little. I have tested this (closed track of course) numerous times, numerous weather conditions. Maybe its just my freak of a car, but it does depend on the gear I am in.

I've hit 130 in my car with the tranny in "4" a couple times... hopefully RSM will be able to take care of that problem for me though... :D

Hey Mikey, you should try going to 130 in 3rd gear, and throw it into 4th to see what happens.

Yeah I have hit 130 in therd just to clarify the rev limiter is 6000 fuel shut off. But man i was thinking about it and you would get some good gas milage at that speed. becasue when i am doing 100 KPH 60MPH i am sitting at about 1800 in fourth. doing 200KPH 120MPH in fourth i sit at about 3800. for doing 200KPH thats not to bad i know a 2.4 would have to barry 5th at 6000 to get up near there

I can't believe I never thought of that. I doubt it would still climb, but its always interesting to see what happens. I will have to give that a try sometime soon, maybe this week.

The rev limiter on the v6 is indeed 5800 rpms. I am not familiar with the 2.4l, it may very well be 6k, but I have never rode in one or drove one.

I have a 97 GT 3100, and I will prob. be putting nitrous in it. I was wondering what kind of chip I'd need so it'd be compatible with the nitrous. Mine tops out at 105 also b/c of the governor.

that's weird, my 97 gt did not stop pulling at 105, it pegged and I decided to slow down before I hit the limiter.

I had a '95 GA GT with a 5 speed and it topped out at 115 mph.;)

I'm glad to see some civized discussion on this topic! When I brought it up before the crash, I got a little info and a lot of flames. :(

I'm not sure if I read that right, but when I hit my limiter in 4th at about 106, I still have almost 1000 RPM left, and in 5th well over 1500 RPM available. I figure without the limiter, I'd be good for 140 in 5th assuming I have the power to beat the drag.
I have tried contacting ASE numerous times to no avail. Has anybody DONE this to a 2.4, and if so, who did you have do what?!?! ASE doesn't list a chip for my car, and agsin - they haven't responded to 3 e-mails about it. :(

Coming home tonight I thought about everyone sayin they cen go 130 if you put it in third...i got to about 132-133(i couldn't tell) and about 5800 RPMs like efveryone says...it was a rush...but not as much as doin 168 in my friends WS6....that was fun!

Of course, you stopped at the track on the way home.... RIGHT?!?! :p
Oh, and the redline on my 2.4 is 6200 RPM, so I hope the rev limiter isn't 6000!!! Actually, I have hit it once or twice at the dragstrip, it seems to be in the 6400 to 6500 RPM range.
I only hit the limiter in our 3400 GT twice, seemed to be at about 127 or 128 MPH. Took forever to get there, though. That car flies to 110, everything after that was molasses uphill in January in Siberia over rough terrain into a strong headwind. lol

That is funny, I was able to get 113-114 mph before my 96 GAGT would shut down. I know on warmer days it would shut down at 108-109. It all depends on where the RPMs are at.
Find a long steep down hill and see what it hits then.:D

I've done 126-130mph in 4th plenty of times. I'll often put her in 3rd at 75mph and she'll pull really good to 110mph. At that point I'll put it back in D to hit the higher speeds.

At about 204KPH you have to shift into forth becasue therd is maxed out witch is about 122mph

Last night I tried what you guys said, "Keep it in 3rd and run it to your rev limiter" well it didn't work, as soon as I hit 107 it slowed me back down, and I thought that it was just something I did so I tried it again, but it didn't make a difference. Although my car is running better than it has so far.

Gave it a shot today. Took it to 127 in 3rd, then dropped it into 4th. Weird, but it held the same engine speed and vehicle speed for almost a mile. Shifted at 127, engine held and so did speed, nothing changed until I let off the gas. Its like it was on cruise. Pedal was buried, too. Hmmmm....

what reaading tells the computer to "cut-off" the RPM or speed?
Probably the RPM's so if I put 20's on with some 55 series..........
