Custom Compacts canceled
By Kara McConnell, May 5, 2003

Carlisle Productions is eliminating the Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals car show from its annual schedule. A press release issued this morning said Chief Executive Officer John Detrick is to announce the decision today. Area law enforcement personnel and municipal officials have been invited to the press conference in the Wilson Room of the Comfort Suites Carlisle in the first block of South Hanover Street. No other statements were permitted to be made in advance by Carlisle Productions staff, the press release said.

The third annual event rolled into town Friday and, by the time the more than 40,000 showgoers left Sunday, police issued hundreds of traffic citations, made several arrests and responded to calls that ranged from street racing, public nudity, underage drinking and an altercation that involved a gun.

"This is really the only car show we have a problem with," Middlesex Police Chief Barry Sherman said this morning. He said his officers didn't respond to a single incident stemming from the 2003 Spring Carlisle show that ran from April 23-27.

Middlesex Township had 13 officers working 12-hours shifts from Friday till Sunday morning, Sherman said.

They issued 52 citations for underage drinking, seven citations for public drunkenness, 22 citations for having an open container, seven citations for disorderly conduct and wrote up 178 traffic violations, he said.

His officers were assisted by 14 deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and seven state police officers.

Carlisle Borough and North Middleton Township authorities also responded to car show-related incidents over the weekend.

When Middlesex officers responded to one incident at a township motel early Sunday morning, someone apparently jumped on the hood of the police cruiser, denting the hood, Sherman said. He plans to review surveillance tapes today to try to identify the perpetrator.

"They're drunk," the chief said in explaining the disorderly behavior of the visitors, whose ages typically are 17 to 22.

When police raided motel rooms this weekend, he said, they found kegs of beer, bathtubs filled with ice, beer cans and beer bottles. Sherman said some visitors set off fire extinguishers in hotel hallways and destroyed motel and hotel property.

"Quite frankly, if I never heard of this car show again, I'd be happy," he said.

Nudity common

Police also responded to calls about women "flashing" truck drivers along Route 11 and found women running nude around motel and hotels.

On Saturday the show had a Mardi Gras-type atmosphere, as men offered women beaded necklaces if the women flashed their breasts or private parts. The activity started inside the show and continued outside the fairgrounds as patrons were leaving.

"This isn't Mardi Gras and I don't think this is a community that needs Mardi Gras-type activity," Mayor Kirk Wilson said this morning.

He said he would not attending today's press conference, but someone from borough council would be there to participate.

Sonia Friscia, who lives in the 1300 block of North Pitt Street, was happy to hear the news this morning.

"Good; I hope they eliminate all of (the car shows)," she said.

Pleased with decision

North Middleton Township Police Chief Jeffrey Rudolph commended Carlisle Productions for canceling the show.

"They gave the showgoers a second chance, so to speak, and they didn't act accordingly," he said.

He and other law enforcement officials had criticized the behavior of this show's attendees in prior years.

That's fukked up... a few morons gotta ruin it for everyone. Look at the numbers... 40,000 people... now of course you are going to have problems. The hundred tickets or whatever should be expected when you cram 40,000 heads anywhere... especially when there's alot of younger people.

IMO they should continue to promote constructive hobbies like car customization. Maybe if they had 40,000 bored residents in town and drug traffic and hookers started showing up they'd think about which they'd rather have. :tool:

I figured it was just a matter of time before it was cancelled/shut down. People can't act responsibly and now look what happens. Always a few bad eggs ruin it for the rest of us :(

Comments like this **** me off: "Quite frankly, if I never heard of this car show again, I'd be happy," the chief said.

"Good; I hope they eliminate all of (the car shows)," Sonia Friscia said.

Guess you now need fairgrounds that's far away from the city. Basically, in the middle of no where. :(

...yeah...this one really ticks me off too... guess dopey doesn't realize that if all the shows are gone, then many of the hotels will have to close due to lack of business... the whole towns economy will go bust... and since she won't have work she'll have to sell her house... and go on unemployment... and ...well...u get where i'm goin...

this was basically in the middle of nowhere. its a little hick town. it is a shame though, but from what i saw, it wasn't necessarily the show car people that were being stupid, it was the people who came to the show to look.

If they are cancelling it for next year, is there any chance of holding it in another place? After the money they made off that show, I am sure there is another place out there that would be glad to make some cash and bring excitement into town. I'll give up my backyard if it comes down to it. The entire half acre :boogie:

That's frickin' gay! What do they expect from 40,000 young people? They didn't have any problems with the other show because the cops were probably getting drunk with them, LoL. We're young, "import" car punks so we're automatially 100 times worse than the muscleheads who do the exact samething. The 178 traffic tickets were for stupid, non-moving violation ****. Everyone I saw get pulled over was going about 5 miles an hour in traffic, not actually doing anything wrong. Dumbass cops giving tint, too low, or improper lights bull**** tickets. Idiots, I hate stupid cops. They're (Carlisle people) goin to take a big hit in profit next year without this show. It's the most expensive show to go to and enter, not to mention probably has the biggest turn-out. Maybe they'll realize it was a mistake after next year?

Yea... can you say tax increase? If I were a resident, I'd gladly put up with a weekend of this for cheaper taxes.

That sucks......I diden't see anybody that was anymore out of control than they are at a football game or baseball game, etc. I got a ticket for my tint that I am going to court over. Table X is what they were using as their guidelines which by the way is given to inspection stations across the state as guidelines for inspections. The F'n cops think it is some type of new law they have to enforce, when in reality its not.

Some of the girls in my area were having a good time flashing and drinkin' even though they looked pretty young. I diden't mind though......:)

Yea, personally for small towns like this, these kinda events ARE their economy. This will raise some taxes next year....plus im sure the kids are gonna complain who stood on the corners and video taped all the cars going by.!!

Email from Carlisle:

2003 Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals
The Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals is eliminated from the annual schedule of events held at the Carlisle Fairgrounds.
The third annual Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals (CCCN), presented by Quaker State, was held May 2 -4. More than 40,000 custom compact car enthusiasts gathered at the Carlisle (Pa.) Fairgrounds to show off and look at 3,300 show cars, as well as buy and sell accessories and modification parts. The weekend thunderstorms predicted early in the week never materialized and the weather was beautiful. Check out the winners' list.

Unfortunately, the behavior of a small percentage of show attendees led to significant disturbances both on the fairgrounds and throughout the community. The completely unacceptable nature of this behavior has resulted in the cancellation of future Carlisle Custom Compact Nationals at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. We feel tremendous sadness for the majority of show attendees who are losing the best show of its kind in the country because of the actions of a few.

The decision to cancel the show was announced during a press conference on Monday, May 5th. Click on the following links for a transcript of the press conference (PDF-103k) and the post-event press release (PDF-132k)

We remain committed to supporting the growth and development of this section of the automotive hobby and, in the future, we hope to reintroduce a show for those involved, but it will not be held in Carlisle.

We want to thank the 10s of thousands of you who supported us last weekend with your respect for our facility and our community. It is truly a shame that this show cannot continue for you.

I think they should bring it to Upstate New York... Somewhere like Woodstock where there are tons of fields. This way people can get roudy, no one's gonna care because it's been done and it's not too far away from New York City, where there are TONS of people who own *Bling *Bling rides!

I agree with you for once in my life. There were a lot of western New Yorkers at Carlisle who would love to see the show moved to woodstock. Plus, you can still have the alcohol and nudity. It's not like they haven't existed there before

That transcript/news conference/decision, is pathetic. Simple put, they are a bunch of old, lazy people who live in the country and are afraid to face reality.

4th leading show it is?? Yeak, OK..speaking from attending GM Nats last year, if GM Nats is the average that they get for all their manufacturer specific shows then CCJ has to be at least 1 or 2. GM Nats was about 1/3 the size of CCJ last year.

I dont think they will miss it, now, if they dropped the Corvett show. the town would fall off the map. as for being 4th, I can see some what where it could be. Carlisle has numerous shows all year. I wonder if they will get rid of the custom truck show??? it draws about the same type of crowd. but then, a hick towns like their trucks ;)

Well, it is good that this show will be closer and i might be able to go but all depending on work and all. I will have to see what is going on also because that is really close to inventory. I will miss the syracuse show because of inventory which is the week after this show you are talking about. Is this going to be just like carlisle? I was not going to go to carlisle this year and go next year but i would have been really ****ed off if i did not go! :rage:
