View Full Version : This is where you run wires through the firewall

I thought I'd snap a pic while I was under there.. I know it's a common question so here it is.
As you can see on the box on the left, there is plenty of space for wire. I have an 8ga, 3 of the strobe wires, and a bunch of other crap going through there.. plenty of space
The box on the right - if you are uncomfortable poking through an existing grommet, then make yourself new holes and make sure you put grommets in before putting wire through..

pull back the carpet on the drivers side, behind the pedals..
shine a flashlight, you'll see everything..

Yeah I am sorry. That pic is with the driver's side hush panel out (the piece of plastic that is in the area of your OBD2 port) and some of the carpet pulled back.

i used the one iceman used but i had to poke another hole in mine since I am running 2 gauge(soon to be 2 2 gauge wires), 4 LED underbody wires(ummm 10 ga?), 4 16 ga wires for strobes, and some more little stuff. There is plenty of room for wires in the upper one though, but you might have to poke an extra hole in the rubber boot.

I just paid the local stereo shop 20 bucks to install it for me  I screwed up once, and somehow, my 4 gauge wire was hitting something and it burned through my wire, so, after replacing that wire, i decided not to chance it anymore :)

ALRIGHT, since he insists we post in this thread i will post in this thread, no matter how much of a hassel it may be.
The problem i have with that is if i want to replace the rubber peice i have to disconnect all of those wires that run through it. and that will take forever. And no, i'm not going to cut all of the wires and solder them back together.

/\ why would you want to? if you really need to you might be able to disconnect all the wires, cut the gormet off, pull the wires through and re run them through the gormet, i dont know if it would really be worth it, also is there is an issur os space, make you own hole and if its the rubber, just reseal it.......or wait for master iceman to respond

why are u going to have 2-2guage wires running in your car?not understanding. wouldnt it be easier to just a 0 guage run to a dist block inside the car, then u could split it into 2-2guage off the block. just my idea.

if its that much of a problem, you could cut the new grommet and seal it with silicone.

First of all, why on earth would you ever need to replace that grommet?? It will outlast the life of the car, not only that, you'd have to disconnect and probably replace the engine harness as well. anyways of all the years I've been doin this, it's never been an issue.
You have to poke through a grommet, or drill a new hole, to get through the firewall.. plain and simple. If you don't want to, no stereo in the trunk for you.

What is your reason for replacing the grommet  :wtf No water is going to get inside your car from that little hole unless you drive into a lake
Sheesh...it's fircken power cable! ITS NOT THAT HARD!
Poke a damn hole and stick the wire through the grommet. If you're still worried....put a little silicone around the wires. Just take a smaller knife and poke an 'x' with it to run the wires through.

the 'x' idea is good, i like it, but there is only one problem, i cant get to the thing because the fuse box is in the way, and my dad says i cant take the fuse box off.

There is a clip underneath the front of the fuse box that holds it into its holder. Push it up and you can pull the box right out.

is it any of the circled things in those pics? I think it's the thing in the first pic, but do you just pull it and it slides off and then seperates the fuses from the box or something?

no, reach your finger around the bottom of it from the front of the car.
There's plenty of space, push the hanger through from inside the car, up towards the fuse box.. done

06-03-2005, 03:48 PM
well i got the hangar through the thing but the 4 gauge wire that I taped to it is way to big to pull through. I tried beating it through and it still wont go, that's why I think that cutting that 'x' will work.
iceman
06-03-2005, 04:22 PM
when you tape the wire to the hangar, make sort of a cone with the electrical tape so it's tapered and pushes through esier.
cut the 'x' and be done with it man.
Do it...NOW! :D
Just make sure you don't cut it too big or else you'll have to silicone around it a little. if you leave it small enough it will still seal it up good...but streach enough to get the wire through.

that's what i'm talking about, i can't get the stupid fuse box off to cut it. I'm going to do it though.

I've searched for this, but couldn't find anything that works for my install.
I need to run 1/0 wire to the back. Has anyone fit 1/0 through the firewall without making a new hole? If so, what grommet?
What do most people do with the 1/0? I would assume it isn't easy to run it under the vehicle either?

alright man, that's a big wire if i'm correct, and i was very weary to poke a hole in the grommet, but all is well, when you force it it seals fine.
it's a must to put a hole in the grommet OR drill a new hole in the firewall and make a grommet.
to get to the grommet there is a plastic cover under the drivers side - the dash. pull the little pin thing out and force that plastic cover out, simple as can be, then you can see the grommet. it's the higher one that you would probably want to go thorugh. since that's a big wire your gonna have to use something bigger than a close hanger, but just force it through, tape it to the wire good, get in the engine bay and pull and it will work out for you just fine.

That is what I ended up doing. I took some household 3 wire, wire and taped the 1/0 to it. I was able to force it through (with a ton of work). The wire came undone from the 1/0 after it was about 1" out of the opening. And as you probably know, there isn't much room to get back there, so I had to push some from the backside and then clamp it and pull it out. Not easy, but I didn't have to do any drilling and/or cutting.

hey man, it took me 45 minutes to do my 4 guage wire for my amp. I know it's not fun.
Glad to hear that it worked out for you.

Did you guys find out how to remove the fuse box?
As was stated earlier, I reached under the box from the side closest to the front of the car, but I didn't feel anything.
I tried to just run the wire without removing the box, but it seems that's not possible.

this is wut i did, take a wire hanger (the ones u get from the dry cleaners) and untwist it till its a all str8 and make a lil hook on the end and go fishin for the wire.
i didn't know how to remove the fuse box either

thank god i finally found this one... after 3 hours of searching the web, i found it! so then i registered. just to reply. A friend told me that in my GT model there should be a factory installed amp running the 6x9's in the back. I had considered trying to locate it and running a splitter to the 800W 4 channel (soon to be a 1600W 2 channel) powering my 2 12" 400W Dual Voice Coil subs. Now i'm going to just run through the firewall as was explained here... I will post back on the site and let ya know how it goes. THANKS.

Drill a hole in the gas tank and route it through there. PM Cavingman for a DIY.
