I am just about to 30,000 miles, and with all the stop and go traffic around here, I plan to get the Tranny fluid changed sometime between now and 35K or so.

I originally planned on just dropping the pan / changing the fluid this time since the dealer said it was $180 for a flush / fill / filter change. A local place (that just did my brakes) wants $99 for the same service, so I am leaning in that direction.

Since I am having it flushed, I am thinking about getting Mobil 1 ATF as a replacement. It is not as expensive as Redline or the purple stuff (forget the name), but is an upgrade.

...or am I just throwing my money away getting the synthetic? I assume I am not since Transmissions are not cheap, and synthetic would reduce wear.

Before I call and ask, how much fluid would I need to bring with me? How much does the car hold, and how much (if any) is "wasted" during the flush process?

What did you pay for it, and where did you get it?

I don't think I have seen it anywhere around here...

Dealer did a flush and used Mobil1 for $90?

The dealer here wants $180 for the flush using regular fluid. Not sure I trust them for such a complicated procedure.

We're talking about a dealer that took three tries before they finally were able to put a wheel weight on that would not fall off a day later.

to do the trans flush it takes just under one case of ATF. it sounds like alot... but it replaces all the fluid, just not what is in the pan. see the torque convertor holds fluid as well as the cooler. what the do is they hook up to the trans coolant lines and completely replace evry drop of old ATF in the trans and trans lines with new fresh ATF. trust me it is so worth it. i used to perform this service and it doubles the expected life of the tranny when you perform this at the recommended intervals! Ok so say the trans in your Grand Am GT1 was designed to last 100,000 miles with regular service this type of service would put that to 200,000 miles of life. so yes it is worth it.

now for the purple stuff you were talking about it is called "Royal Purple" and that sh!t is awesome... but so darn expensive, as well as redline. you will be plenty happy with the Mobil 1 ATF.

A case being 12 quarts?

a case is usually 12 quarts the last i looked. lol j/k. yeas the only reason is you are flushing the torque convertor, the cooler, and valvebody all out. you dont want any deposits to remain! but do yourself a favor: NEVER USE B&M TRICKSHIFT FLUID IN A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE, THEY GET A LITTLE ANGRY WHEN THAT IS PUT IN!

This thread may help out: www.grandamgt.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=11607.

I'm going to do a t-tech flush and put in some Redline D4 ATF as soon as I finish with the Auto-Rx cleaning interval. Craig99SE2 mentioned that Redline is coming out with D5 soon.
