View Full Version : Service Engine Light???
My Service engine light just came on today on my 99 GA with 80,000 miles and I have not experienced any problems. Is this an automatic reminder to get service or should I take it in?? Seems to be running and driving fine....How do I turn this off?? THanks for your help

At 80k i didnt have any light come on. Check your headlights a bulb could of burnt out the only way to turn it off is to go to a dealer or someplacke like autozone and have them scan the car.

dmkc,
First thing to check, is if the gas cap is on properly [turn the gas cap until it clicks at least 3-times] (A common thing that will trip the SES light on).
If it is the gas cap:
The SES light comes on if you driven at least twice in a row with the gas cap lose.
The SES light will turn off after driving the car at least 3-times in a row with no gas cap leakage.
It will take at least 40 drives in a row with the no gas cap leakage to clear the code from memory.
If it is not the gas cap, you need to bring it in to someone to read the codes & diagnose it from there.
A headlight bulb worn-out would trip a SVS light...I believe.

if not gas cap it could be a O2 sensor or a Crank Position Sensor, or any other sensor, so go have your computer scanned to see what code pops up!

Do this.. Go into the fuse panel box, and pull the "PCM" fuse. Leave it out for 5 minutes, then put it back in. This will clear the "code" thats triping the SES light. Granted you won't find out what is wrong with the car, but it will turn it off temporarily. If it pops right back on, take it in, if it doesn't come back on, then don't worry about it. I'm almost sure this will work on a GAGT, I haven't tried it yet b/c I have 02, but I have done it on my 99 WS6.
Let me know.

no problem symptoms? No code number? There's no way we could know what is wrong.
Read the sticky that iceman mentioned and get the code scanned.
