I fell asleep while driving at 3am on Tuesday morning. The resulting damage to my car is about $2500CDN. :(

Luckily no one else was involved, and I only scraped the centre guard wall before I woke up and regained control of the car.

Damages are:

Front left rim SHATTERED, put a hole about 1.5 inches round in the tire.

Front left quarter panel scratched and dented. It prevented me from being able to open my door without a lot of force.

Front Left Mirror. I had the front mounting post of the mirror ripped off, and the mirror housing was scratched to hell.

The moulding that goes under the car from the front wheel well to the rear one, scratched heavily in the rear.

The metal just above the rear wheel well was scratched. It was about 1 inch wide and 10 inches long.

Rear bumper cover was scratched.

Front Bumper cover was scratched.

Neither of my doors had any scratches or dents.

And I may have some suspension damage. But I won't know until they repair the body of the car and get a new rim and tire on there.

I am extremely lucky that only the car was hurt (that and my pride). Being 3am, there was very little traffic on the road, so I did not hit any other cars, and I was able to bring the car safely to a stop. I was not injured, although I ended up lightly banging my head just above the seat belt mount on the pillar. With all things considered, I could have killed myself, or someone else, so I am grateful that all that I have is $2500 in damages.

I'm never going to drive when I'm tired again. I hope that this hard lesson learned can provide an example of what may happen to other people on this forum if they drive tired. Everyone be very careful out there. :)

To add some humour to this, my BRIGHT RED GA GT is in the shop right now getting fixed. The rental that I got from Hertz is a 2003 Bright Red GA GT. :) That's kind of amusing.

The rim was replaced with an aftermarket replacement that looks the same. Only $250 CDN.

I also had no suspension damage. I'm sure glad of that.

Thanks for the kind words.

Omg, good to hear you're okay!!

I've almost put myself in a few precarious situations which could have resulted in an accident.

1) I chose to go visit some friends who lived an hour away from me after I got off work. I got off work at 9, left immediately and got there at 10. I stayed over till about 1 when I decided I better head home. Well to my surprise, it had snowed, alot while we were in the garage working on cars. In the location I was, no one was around, nor were they driving. So the highway was completely covered in snow and there were no tracks made. It was scary as all hell, not being able to see ahead of you, depending on how the car tilted in a turn to realize you were turning, other wise you just assumed you were going straight. I drove like that, tired, for one hour straight. Almost put my car in a ditch a few times.

2) Was driving home from Grand Rapids at 2 AM. Grand Rapids is 2 hours away from my house. I was completely exhausted and was driving when I started to doze lightly, the drive was already getting to me. Then out of no where, I see the MASSIVE carcaus of a dead deer in the middle of the road. I don't know where I got that burst of energy, but I grabbed the wheel and swerved like it was my last minute living. My unpainted SC/T chin spoiler missed it by an inch lol.

I guess the important thing to remember here is that we all do stupid things. We just have to hope that we survive long enough to learn from our mistakes.

Man... You're one lucky SOB. I've fallen asleep behind the wheel before. It used to happen when I'd pull 16-hour shifts at Air Canada. The last time it happened I woke up just in time to save myself from plowing into a bridge at 130. Now, no driving tired. I either stay over or pull over for a nap.

Glad you're okay though.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear of your incident, but I'm glad you are OK. Falling asleep at the wheel can be deadly.....I learned (the hard way) long ago not to get behind the wheel when I'm tired.

Unfortunately, I'm one of those people that can sleep in a club. :(

Nothing keeps me awake when I'm really tired. I just have to make sure that I'm really awake before I drive to work.

Thanks for your thoughts, guys.

sorry to hear about it but i'm the same way once i fall asleep it's hard to wake me up.

just last friday i hadn't slept the night before and i was driving home from where MikeNT256 was putting his kit on at, i had to slap myself a few times to stay awake, i nodded off at one point and woke up doing 90+, scared the crap out of me. thankfully it was at 2pm so not many people were on the road.

Good to hear your alright and only minor damage (if you want to call it that, could have been worse) was caused to your car. I have driven sleepy before and it wasn't fun. I was driving home from New Jersey at about 12:30am. I would try to keep myself awake, but my eyes would keep closing. It was terribly hard to do. My eyes would close then when I open them, the car is heading for the wall barrier. Happened too many times during that drive. Never again!!!

I'm a deep sleeper. My clock has 2 alarms and I would sleep through both of them. I don't hear a thing. If there is loud noise and I need sleep, I just get used to it and fall asleep. That's how bad of a sleeper I am.
