Blue Top Drive-In Info:
Johnsen's Blue Top Drive-In in Highland, Indiana, is the real deal, offering home-brewed root beer and an extensive menu of unique trademarked sandwiches. The huge marquis, a neon masterpiece, cost $20,000 when installed in 1963, and thanks to frequent maintenance by Kent Johnsen, The Blue Top's current owner, it still lights up sequentially. Summer cruise nights pack out three parking lots, but if you're lucky enough to get a parking spot under the awning, carhops like Dana Spinoza will bring your chow with a smile. Kent is passionately opposed to a highway expansion project threatening to lop off a sizeable piece of the parking lot.
More:
If you're tired of the same old fast food and would like to introduce your kids to a good old-fashioned, hand-made hamburger, then make a run for the border--the Indiana border, that is. Located just south of I-80, this 50s style drive-in will make you want to twist and shout!
Carhops--on roller skates if it's not too busy--bring your food to your window. (There's also a small dining room inside.) A pinball machine and jukebox can occupy kids while they wait. And antique-car buffs sometimes stop by in their mint-condition vintage vehicles. Car shows are sometimes held here in the summer.
Burgers include the Cruiser (a single burger for $2.99) and the Big Ben (a double burger for $4.49), as well as the Ranch Burger, which is loaded with bacon, lettuce, tomato and ranch dressing ($3.69). There's also a Beef Manhattan, a hot beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy ($4.99), a Turkey Burger ($2.69) and a Gardenburger Vegetarian Delight ($3.39). For another $1.40, you get fries, slaw, pickle and sherbet. Breaded cauliflower and hash browns can be ordered on the side. Be sure to try the homemade root beer (kid size: $.99, small: $1.25, large: $1.35) or a malted milkshake topped with whipped cream (kid size: $1.99, adult size: $2.55). The kid's menu offers a mini-cheeseburger ($1.99) and grilled cheese ($.99). (Adults can order off the kid's menu on weekdays.) Desserts include everything from black cows and sundaes ($2.35) to cherry cobbler ($2.99).
