If all of us that have had intake gasket failures file a complaint with the NHTSA, they may force a recall. Please go here http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
and file a compaint.

And what would be the safety-related defect with the intake gasket?

Whoever does your oil change should notice the leak well before it's bad enough for the engine to stall.

You probably would get a low coolant pressure or low oil pressure light as well before the engine fails.

ya mine went if for 'just' an oil change yesterday. this 'oil change' ended up costing 750. new intake gasket, resurfaced rotors, plus burnt out tail light. thats wut i call an expensive oil change

there were no signs of a failure, i had 15k miles on the car and the engine was clean as a whistle.

Mine was replaced at 19K and again last week at 35K. I've always noticed the small leak long before it was a big issue. The gasket on my 96 leaked for about 60K miles before it actually blew.
