You're not going to get a V8 sound on a V6. The harmonics are much different. Personally I like the way the Borla sounds on a 3.4

Well I have a 97 with the 3.1 and dual Flowmasters. I have the 40 series on mine and it doesn't sound like I thought it would. Sounds decent at times but altogether not what I'd expect. I plan on getting my resonator removed just to see if it helps at all.

I just did that to my GA, I put a 80 series flowmaster and custom piping all the way from the cat, I also changed the tips for some different ones, well same round style double tips, but slightly larger than the stock ones, you would think they are stock unless you take a closer look:thumbs: I kinda like the sound, due to the fact that having driven a loud and obnoxious eagle talon for years, this rumbling and deeper tone is just what the doctor ordered, I have heard the borla also, it does sound quite nice, but since I just don't make enough with family and 2 other vehicles to buy a borla system, this was my option, I did it all myself with my welder for under 200 bucks, (I only had my friend jeff bend me some piping since he works at a shop and they have a mandrel thingie, very nice full bends, no crushing)

I have never heard the 40 series, on a GA that is... I did hear it in a dodge stealth and it sounded quite nice but not like the 80 series, the 80 is slightly just a tad less metallic sounding than the 40, one thing though, make sure you remove that stupid resonator so you get a nice sound, and since the 40 and the 80 are about the same price (I think) it's up to you on which you want, I went for the 80 and removed the resonator from the pipe after the cat

Here is a short clip of my 97 3.1 with one flowmaster 40 series on it. This is the in cabin sound. I modified it slightly now so it a bit louder. but this is a good reference for sound.

From the cars I've heard, Magnaflow sounds the most like a V8 at all RPM. Flows sound good at low RPM but get horribly raspy when you get on it.

I'm glad you said that since I'm in the process of buying a flowmaster. I was almost certain I wanted the 40 series since it was supposed to have a little more bite than the 80's. But I have a feeling the "better bite" I was told about was that metallic crap sound I do not want. Guess it's either an 80's or Magnaflow for me then. domestic4life my buddy has an 80's flowmaster(monte carlo 3400 V6) and it doesn't sound bad in the upper. I haven;t heard the magnaflow to compare but plan to before I buy something myself.

I have a 4 banger with a complete exaust(2.5") from manifold back, with flow 80 to dual out. Sound amazing i gett alot of compliments on it. At idle has a low deep rumble when you start pushing it in the higher rpms, it sound more l;ike a rally car. Oh it still sound grea though.
i am looking to do this too. i was thinking of the 40's flowmasters. but in the end i might go with magnaflow.

I was out Cruising the SS last night. I was at a light and kept hearing a low rumble like a mild V8. I kept looking for it. When the light turned green a 3.8L Bonneville took off next to me w/ dual straight through (magnaflow) type mufflers. That was what I was hearing. It wasn't quite V8 soundgin when he took off, but it still sounded good.
As for the Flows. I have an 80 series that previous owner put on my SS. I personally don't care for it. They tend to pop a lot on deceleration. Especially when it is cold.

I used to have Magnaflow
they were very smooth, I loved the sound
I currently have Flowmaster 40 series on my car
I like this one better cause it does sound like a V8
It's louder
and it sounds just like it would without mufflers but just slightly quieter
You can't go wrong with both
I have a 97 GAGT with the 3100
with 2.5" piping from the cat-back - removed resonator, and a highflow cat
that might be the difference

k thats cool, you said 2.5 form the cat did u enlarge it cause isnt the stock size 2.25, if i get the muffler wat inlet size do i get 2.25 right?

When doing exahust IMO a MUST is remove the resinator and always upgrade to a bigger piping, it will make for a better sound guarenteed

Does anyone have a pic of the resonator? What is it? Where is it? And what does it do?
I don't know much about exhaust.

If i'm not mistaken
the stock size on the 3100 from 96-98 is 2"
it's definatly not 2 1/4
I think people say that the 3400 is 2 1/4
in my 3100 95 i think it is 2 1/4

I wonder if it differs if it's a GT or an SE
maybe GT's had 2" but dual and SE's had 2 1/4
I just reminded myself
and I had 2" for sure on mine

so heres some exhaust info for everyone
i have dual flowmaster 80 series deltaflow. Very quiet, but a lil hp gain. the 40's will be loud, with same gain
if u have a N/A 4 banger, u dont need anything bigger than 2" piping. U will lose backpressure, and u will end up losing power. If u have a v6 u can run 2 1/4 and be good. The only time u should run 2 1/2 is if ure running forced induction (or V8 or bigger)
the resignator is the smaller piece after the cat .... if ure lookin down ure exhaust the first big piece on the pipeline is ure cat, the next is ure resignator, and then ure mufflers
