Some of it is the smoking. I used to work for a rental car agency and holy crap did the smoking cars smell like mold and death....Now all rental cars are non-smoking, the car places had a hard time selling them used with that stink...

Might be condensation accumulating in the vents. Try running the heater for about a minute before you turn the car off and see if that makes it better.
I smoked in my 2000......It eventually turns into a moldy smell.....Got nasty after a while!! I still smoke....But not in the '03! DON"T SMOKE IN THE CAR!!! MAKES IT STINKY!!!

ive been smoking in my car for about 2 yrs now, and when people come into my car they compliment me on how it still smells new.
How does it smell when it rains? Mine smelled OK usually....but on rainy days the smell was expecially strong.......Thats why I will never smoke in the 03.....want to keep that new car smell.
off topic:
I work with a chick who sits in the parking lot with all the windows rolled up in her Monte Carlo and smokes like a chimney....She wonders why we make fun of her and call her smelly!! lol

Try spraying the OUST spray through the vents a couple of times. Thats what I did in my car when I bought it. Haven't had a problem since ( i also don't smoke or let anyone else smoke in my car but that is beside that point)

if you only have the problem when your running the a/c...it is condensation build up....in the housing that holds the blower motor the heater core and the evaporator.......there is a pan in the bottom that catches the condinsation build up...in the the bottom of that pan there is a little drain tube that is supose to drain off the water to the ground....YOUR DRAIN TUBE IS PLUGED...this doesnt let the water drain off and you have mold starting to grow in the bottom of the pan......the easist way to solve the problem right now is to get a coat hanger straighten it out, find the tube(it will be underneith the car on the right side near the fire wall)and GENTLY push the coat hanger up through the tube...this will clear up the clog..for a while but it will get clogged again.....the only way to fix it is to drop the pan and clean all the crap out of it...[

one word for you: FABREEZE! spray a little in the vents and let it settle for a while. it helps kill the smell

I have the same problem and I DO NOT SMOKE. I will try the drain plug thing. How long does it usually take for this to build up to where it plugs?

You see the vents holes outside under the the windshield where your wipers sits. They have this spray at you local automotive shops that you could spray in it while you have your AC on MAX it should eliminate the oder. I had this on my old 99 SE and sprayed it and never came back. I do not remeber the name but if you look in the AC Rifrigerent area you will find it hope this helps.

Depends on the driving conditions.....dirt roads, pet hair..sand from the beach, if it gets tracked into the car small particals of what ever get up into the return vent and ends up in the pan..you will know when the build up gets real bad, you will start to loose air flow...

The coat hanger does work on some cars IE the 92-98 Grand ams. However the newer ones are more tricking to get into
