Here is a dumb one for you guys!! I haven't posted in a LONG ass time. A friend of mine just gave me a Sony Xplode unit (black face, fold out). I don't want to go to an installation place cause they'll rip me off, so I want to do it myself. I figure it can't be THAT hard since my car is farely new. I have a 2000 Grand Am SE1 custom. Anyone know how and willing to post? Or anyone know of a website with instructions?

that'll show you how to take off the trimpanel and remove and install new HU. does it have a wire harness? if so, just match the colors :D

hey i tried to do my 97gt myself and it was a royal pain in the ass. i had to go up ton the city a couple times for parts. GM makes things real difficult with alot of parts that most cars don't need but mine did. so find out everything you need to get before you attempt this on your own and save yourself some trouble

I believe you will find a harness here that will alow you to connect your sony directly to your delco plug without cutting wires. One end will plug into your cars harness and the other plugs into your new stereo. Check with your local retailers, they may have one or can get you one.
scosche harnesses (http://www.scosche.com/scosche/connectors/plug-n-play.asp)
Check out the rest of that site, there may be other things you need I'm not sure.
hope this helps. :p

Get a metra harness METRA 70-1858 and you'll need a metra antenna adapter. 40-GM10
Just go to your local stereo shop and tell em what you need.
the harness should be around 9-12 bucks and the antenna adapter is usually 5-7 dollars. Just lettin ya know so you wont get ripped off.
to install the harness all you do is get the sony harness and the METRA and match the colors together its that simple. Although you wont need the 2 orange dimmer wires or the blue Remote wire unless you have an amp and subs.

I got the plug that fits into the Sony, and I got the plug that attaches to the wiring that came off the old Delco system. I started wiring together the two, now how do I do it? is there a Wiring Map of some kind I could go by, or do I just match up the colors: orange to orange, white to white, white with black strip with white with black strip, etc... etc... etc...? This is all I need to know, the rest is farely easy. I was gonna post a pic so that this might be understood a littel better... but... so let me know thanx!!!

yeah you just match colors. Im kinda confused here did you buy a wiring harness? or not? cause you definately need one. If you dont have one and your cutting your factory harness up the color matching wont work.
There will be soem colors that dont match up like some oranges and blues. those you wont use.

Ok, Here are some visuals to show you exactly what I did. I'll explain waht I did, and what wires go together, and what wires were left over.
I wired them according to this color scheme:
blue - blue
green w/blk - green w/blk
green - green
orange w/wht - orange w/wht
yellow to yellow
red - red
purple - purple
purple w/blk - purple w/blk
grey - grey
grey w/blk - grey w/blk
white - white
white w/blk - white w/blk
---------------------------------
When it has the w/blk or w/wht I mean that there is a black line on it or a white line on it.
On the Sony Harness I have three cords left over:
light blue: ATT (this is what is written on the wire)
Dark blue with white stripe: AMP REM MAX 0.3A
black: ground (right?)
on the delco adapter plug I have 2 wires:
Orange: illumination/Dash
Black: chassis ground (12v-_
I should wire the tw blacks together and ground them to the car, liek when I screw the dask back in, right?
Alright, I hope thats a bit more in detail, and hopefully I did this correctly. Thanks!

you did what your supposed to do :)
what i dont know is to answer your questoin bout the ground, i ASSUME (dont do this till u make sure some else chimes in)
the black wire comign from the stock wiring should go to a ground point (in order to make the stock HU work) so what i think that if u tie the 2 blacks together that it'll ground the Sony HU, also you wont use the ATT wire, its for an antenna, and the AMP REM is the amp remote wire, if u have a amp in your system you'll need to run some 16-18 ga wire from that wire to the amp remote turn on lead

u mighta connected 2 wires wrong, the illumination could be one of em, i did that with mine and it was messed up too
good job on the effort though, it can be tricky on some cars, on others its a breeze, i had trouble with mine, either way you did well :)
