Hey, haven't been here in a while. Just re-signed up again from the server crash.

Anyway, I got my hands on a bad @$$ sony MEX-5D1 mp3 head unit, the one with the full color LCD display where you can put your own movies and pics on it. Got it through an eBay seller in Canada for an unbelievable price, $460 shipped! It costs $1000 in the stores.

Anyway, let me get to the point. I currently have a Pioneer DEH-P7400 and that fits fine. Now I just checked on crutchfield to see if the sony fits with my Grand Am GT '00, it says it doesn't

So my question is, even if it says on Crutchfield that it doesn't fit, does that really mean there is no way it's gonna fit??? This unit has a motorized face plate but no removeable face, WTF sony?

If it doesn't fit, well, that sucks for me. I can sell it for profit but I really wanted it. Oh well. Thanks in advance for your help guys!

According to the specs I know about Sony Head Units, the MEX-5DI and the MEX-1HD have the same dimensions. I installed the MEX-1HD with a Metra 99-4000 install kit in a 2000 GAGT with NO problems. The fact that the kit installs the HU high in the opening helped, as the casing rests on the plastic part the old radio used to attach to, makes it quite rigid and solid.

By the way, you are right, the MEX-5DI is a FIXED install, no detachable face option.

i dont see any reason why it wont fit......... you might have to get a new dash kit.
