Just a quick one for this newbie here, but does upgrading the air filter really give a 10 hp gain...?
I mean, would droppin' $50 for a K&N really be worth it?

IMO, you will not gain 10hp by a direct drop in filter. I think the FDP CAI gives 5-7 hp. I would get that instead of a drop in filter too.

more like 2 hp gain, and the way i see it, a K&N pays for itself since it lasts basicly forever

I'm gonna be a sophomore at Virginia Tech this Fall... Hence, the "V TeK" or "V Tech" (VT). LoL... Not very creative, I know... Plus, I'm new here... :p

Welcome aboard man, that post I linked up has a lot of solid info from what we have all done to the GAGT as far as intake setups.
It should answer most of your questions. Just grab some coffee to get thru it all.;)

honestly did anyone really feel a difference with just a drop in?
I'd say one hp or less
pulling some of the resonators out of the intkae will help more
that S tube is nasty!!

I noticed a bit of a difference with the drop-in. Maybe 2-3 hp at best. I noticed that the stock air box sounded so much better when the intake resonator was removed. I was installing my CAI a few weeks ago, came across some problems, and had to put the stock box back in. I can't even describe to you how much better it sounded with that black retarded elephant trunk lookin' thing off of the intake.
I was most impressed with the MPG gain. I went from about 23 MPG of normal driving to 25-26. THAT'S where the overall expense of a K&N pays for itself in a few months. Being able to go farther on the same amount of gas is very good for the wallet.
Andy, if you're just in the Burgh, I have a drop-in that I'll sell you for $20. It'd be a really good investment for you to do until you can get a real CAI. Check out my thread in the "Stuff for Sale" section. I could meet you somewhere halfway cuz it'd be stupid to ship this thing when I could just drive it 20 miles to you. Lemme know!

I have the drop in and I notice some improvements over stock filter. I get better gas mileage, the car seems more responsive and I actually hear it sucking the air when I rev the car. I don't think I heard that with paper filter. It's well worth the money because they will last forever. All you have to do is buy $9 cleaning kit and clean it every 50K miles(that's what K&N recommends).
I KNOW that CAI is the best way to go, but I just don't want to go thru all those cleaning steps. That's just me.
But I was thinking about getting a cone filter and put it at the end of the MAF and also maybe cut out the top part of airbox cover to fit that in.
