I took the car around after finally installing the tranny temp guage and it pegged out to 215* after some moderately hard driving. I have a Permacool 14k GVWR cooler mounted to the front of the lower left radiator, and no fan on it.

1. -> What temps is everyone else running when driving hard? Normally?

2. -> What setup for a cooler do you have?

The guage install was a lot of fun, I ended up using a swivel/knuckle to get the TTSender in....

Thx
Pat

I knew you'd have a problem installing that, you can barely change a wheel on your own..

Anyways I don't put down 1/2 as much torque as you but if I go psycho traffic driver I'll get up to 195ish on the gauge.. but as soon as i flip the fans on it drops back below 180 real fast

why wouldn't you leave the fans all the time, is there a disadvantage? Sorry for the ignorance.

What's a wheel? Haha...:D I would have had to chisel the fan shroud down to fit the ratchet and 6" ext. in there... Anywho... what is your exact setup for tranny cooler again???

Pat u need a pit crew, I think trans temp sender was like the easiest thing ever :)

Hayden 401.. fan override

Jagey, don't need the fans on if temps are ok, big electrical strain

depends on the amount of shifting the car does. if u are driving for a long time, the temp will go up. i have gotten mine up to about 215 but no higher in like a half hour of driving home from work.
exressway driving is obviously better for the tranny, but when im on norman roads with a lot of stop and go, the thing shoots right up.

perfectly normal

Damn straight... I gotta stay looking pretty.http://www.soccercrew.com/forum/Smilies/78.gif

Seth your fan override is the Caspers right? Is the TC fan thermostat activated?

Yes caspers, pulls mad air through radiator and adjacent Tc..

and if me looking at the temp gauges and reaching down to the switch is thermostat controlled, then yes :woowoo

Seems to me like 215 is kind of high especially with a cooler. Highest i have ever gotten my temp to was 200 but that was with 4 people in my car and drive like a madman through hilly ass pittsburgh streets. I didn't have a cooler. Make sure your wire isnt touching your rt downpipe.

180 normally (highway, no stop lights, that sorta thing)
210 city
I think these are correct. im finding myself forgetting things about my car after not driving it for 2 weeks :(

Yeah the wiring is straight. I made sure it was not exposed to heatsoak either. 215 came after a few hard WOT runs and then some highway driving, and then finally it reach 215 after slowing to 30MPH.

I plan on gettting a Hayden right now...

Normal around-town I'll only see 140-160.
Racing at the track I've never gone above 190.

Here's what I use:

B&M Racing SuperCooler 28,000 GVW (size is 11"x8"x1-1/2")

Here's what I use: *cough*overkill*cough* Matt, you ever notice icicles forming on your tranny? :D

Pat, I would strongly suggest getting the caspers switch. Its a PITA to have to turn on the A/C to get the fans running some times. I'm not sure why my fans kick in so late...

My cooler is just too small for the job. I run it up to around 200-205 just with traffic and stop and go. That is too much for my taste. 14k GVWR is not enough. Even when I turn the fans on the temps really are not dropping more than 5 degrees. I am thinking about a nice (cheap) Hayden Cooler.

***I am thinking about the 18,000 or 22,000 GVWR coolers... looking for a fan to mount on 'em, any recommendations for that guys?

UPDATE : ORDERED the Hayden 26,000 lbs GVWR Cooler.

Installed her w/o drama...

It is a rather large unit as the GVWR indicates. It cools VERY well. I now run normally around 180-195 with a mix of 50MPH/mild traffic. But the ATF still heats to around 210 in traffic and NYC today it reached 235 (traffic stop'n'go) before I turned the fans on, then it cooled nicely back to 215.

I also cut some of the plastic radiator shroud/duct and put an airbox in from the front left nostril of the grill to the radiators.
In the winter this sucker should work even better.....

235!? Jeez! I freak out when I get close to 200. Anytime I get around 180 I hit the fans anyway. Great mod, that fan switch.

BTW, since I switched to synthetic ATF, the temps are 5-10 degrees cooler now! Before it would hit 180 after about 45 minutes of stop-and-go. Now it stays around 170.

I also noticed when i switched to synthetic that mine ran a couple of degrees colder and i haven't experienced any slipping issues.

Well... after the heat I have seen I am very happy.:D I really want a true TC Fan, but I can't find anywhere that sells just the fan. And most want $100-150 for the fan.... 750-1250 cfm tho.

I think you're goin overboard.. the stock fans when on high speed are more than enough

Good stuff. What is the reasoning for not blending the Synthetic & non Syn ATF??? Unequal heat dissipation/viscosity?????

I noticed you guys were saying something about heatsoak with the TT wiring. WHAH? the sender takes the temp of the fluid, which in turn is turned into a voltage and then sent through the wiring to the guage which reads the voltage and turns that into needle movement on the gauge (SIMPLE explanation I KNOW it's not exactly like that though, but so everyone gets the idea.) So getting heat soak with the wire will do squat. Burning the wire with the downpipe however will hurt. Just thought I'd throw some off topic 6 schillings into this one.

EDIT: Anyone know of valves that will do the same thing?

Mine normally runs about 150, or 180 after a lot of stop and go driving. No tranny cooler.
