Hey any 99+ 2.4 owners planning to try going boost? Are you really considering PICracing's turbo kit, but worried about fitment of the plumbing?
Well, I'm supposed to have all this stuff rolling by mid october so i can beat up on some cali grandmas..
anyways, I'm planning on using most of PICRacing's kit. Their only offering for years is 95-03 cavalier, and the older body style 96-98 grand ams which have a different engine bay which also means plumibing difficulties i'm sure...
well so far it looks like i'm going to get PICracing's kit sans the plumbing and have a local shop custom fab me a set. I was just wondering if anybody is curious about having a set of turbo plumbing made for them? Of course it'll cost money but i'll find out when it's time for the install.
just trying to find out if anybody would be interested in turbo plumbing for their 99+ 2.4 which would go with all the mechanical goodies that comes form PICRacings turbo... :)

Hey spy, IF, and that's IF, I go with the turbo instead of the engine swap, i'd be interested in having a set of the plumbing done. I'll keep in contact with you to let you know, just let me know when it comes closer to the time when you want to do this. I'll have figured out what i'm doing by then.

no problem! i'll clue you in on this post when i'm ready for the down and dirty work..
I'm in the process of mine and the only thing I'm using form pic is there manifold. It looks good and it would be a pain in the ass to make. All the rest is custom. GO custom guys it will be cheaper in the end. Ebay is your friend

no me gusta used stuff on ebay... some of the descriptions are a bit shady.. I'm getting certain things from pic... and i'm getting certain things locally w/ a 20% discount...
it'll all work out in the end..
Everything I've gotten off ebay has been new. ANd in the end my kit will be better and cost about 1/2 as much as the Stage 1 kit but will be the quivelent to 3. But I do have to give them credit for a nice manifold :)

you gotta admit though the price of his kit which is as close to a bolt on kit available it's very competitively priced....
he went through all the time blood sweat and tears to get that kit the way it is.. the info he got out of it is priceless which helps us and gives us an idea on where to start..
i would say a building block

sik sik sik.. there's no proof of you being able to beat me N/A... we've never lined up.. I have beaten every gagt in vegas that's come up against me. stock, exhaust, intake exhaust, plug wires.. :) so sik until we line up things look pretty even honestly..
rumor has it going down to your elevation takes off at least .5 of a second... so i'd be running oh say 15.7 :) we're pretty even sik ... believe it.. ;)

I'll believe it when I see it. Soon enough Rob, soon enough. The only person who scares me around here is JD. Lucky bastard's car is registered in FL...goddamn loud ass straight pipes! I want some!!
btw heres a little preview. Yes the turbo is used. Thats the only I have used but it has a fresh rebuild (by me). It is in perfect condition

looks pretty clean DOUG.... Just a question... did you make sure there isn't any "play" with the goods? no unecessary movement that is? Cuz it looks very sweet.. ;)
No play before and like I said, I rebuilt it so if anything was starting to wear its not an issue now. it spins freely, no play, no leaks/cracks and doesn't have any bent fins.

im starting to frown upon the use of turbos while racing, i think im gonna go the all motor route ... just to have the fastest n/a :)... that and there is always going to be some peice of **** *insert any car here* that is about to explode from the psi that will beat you...
Thats cool to go NA but I would be you 50 bucks that when its all said and done you will only be running 14s and have spent way more then us and will regret not just going FI.

alright new twist in the as the turbo spools.....
twist in spy's turbo plans..
removing 2.4 intake manifold and converting over to a 2.3 HO intake manifold + big bore throttle body, to go w/ the turbo setup.

actually, its a lot cheaper to go n/a ... i did a lot of adding up... and it only costs about 2700$ with everything thats usefull, probably less cause there were a fe wmistakes... but no where near the 6g it costs to put in a turbo
SpyhunteR

6gs? mine's totallying out to be under $3500
I ful kit will be about 1700. I don't know where you got 6 gs from.

Actually that is kinda far fetched. I have just went the all motor route, completely done heads, lower intake, upper intake, 62mm throttle body and headers. I should be around 200hp at the wheels. Most of the SC boys are dynoing at 185 to 189 at the wheels.
Plus didn't FastSteve (all motor) whoop on all of the SC boys at the GAP??
Also note I said nothing about turbo because no one has come up with reliable numbers on a turbo GA.
Ohh and you spent more then I did I can guarantee it. I spent just under $1900.00. And that is installed.:D

I'll be giving you reliable turbo numbers in all due time.. ;)
shhhh
mr_eh

all motor is cheaper, and more reliable in the long run... not to mention you tool everyone off the line because their **** takes time to spool :)... well at least the turbos... sc's are sc's, all the engine work is gonna make it run better in the long run i think...
Sorry Officer we are talking about two very different motors. Of course your going to get good gains going the NA route with a V6 even more so on a V8. You arn't going to get impressive numbers on a I4. Go over to j-body.org and read some post about it over there. There are a couple guys with built motors only running 14.7s. THey all admit that dumping the money they did into the motor wasn't worth it and they should have went forced induction. And thier cars are lighter then are cars. By the way I did spend 1700 bucks for everything.
T3 Turbo 150
Intercooler 300
Downpipe 50
Manifold 500
BOV 110
Pipes 70
FMU 100
FPR 180
Boost Controller 20
Misc stuff 100
Installation.done by me
Thats just what I have now and is a very basic kit. But only with that I should put down well over 200. I have done massive amounts of research and know what I'm talking about.
btw spooling won't be much of an issue when your using a T3 ;)

can we say building boost from 1800rpm? I like that idea..
I just got off the phone w/ picracing.. things just got a whole lot more interesting for me.. :D

boosting at 1800rpm? can you say.... new engine after daily driving for a while? :)
SpyhunteR
10-05-2002, 03:58 AM
hardly... only if i'm boosting so much the engine can't support all the pressure..
look at any supercharger setup.. you're making boost pretty much from the point you step on the gas... boost from a turbo is more gradual... it builds up..
so you can modify my comment by saying I'll be making boost from 1800rpms.. if tuned right..
as long as I don't overwork the engine to make it stress too much I should be fine..
besides the next round of engine work on my car is forged pistons and rods and fuel system bolstering type of work.

Hey spy, what's up with the original offer in this thread of if anyone else was interested in the plumbing for a turbo? I'm still interested....
I still want to do a swap. But I just can't. I absolutely CAN NOT find any info on the roush 5-speed someone mentioned in the other thread. And I can't find someone willing to mate my getrag to a L67. Damn. On top of that, I can't find anyone willing to do internal modding on the getrag. I hate connecticut, noone wants to do any work here. I'm beat, I guess. Guess i'll have to settle with a turbo.(for now, who knows what the future will bring :D )
Well, let me know if the offer still stands. I'm willing to do it at any time....

I know there are, but I went to a BUNCH of them. I drove all over the state when I wanted a simple 2.5 inch mandrel bent catback exhaust. Half the places said that there was no way 2.5 could fit. They could only fit 2. C'mon, stock is 2.25 isn't it? I could be wrong....
Almost the rest of them said they didn't have the means to do it, or better yet, a couple places said "what's mandrel bent?" Hmmmm....performance specialists. Yeah right.
The few places that DID say they would do it, quoted me outrageous prices. The CHEAPEST quote I got was just over 1200 bucks. For a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust. On a 2.4. 400 alone for the muffler. No, I don't think so.
I didn't go to High Rev Motorsports, but I did call, and they weren't too helpful. They asked me what car, I told them, and they just told me to go to Janetty Racing in Waterbury.(Janetty, by the way, are the ones who quoted me the super low 1200+)
Man, the worst experience I had was I walked into Pruven Performance in Milford with 8 THOSAND DOLLARS in my pocket to get a turbo fitted, brake+caliper upgrade, rear disc conversion, and a little machine work, and they turned me away saying they refuse to work on any domestic vehicle because "it's not worth it".
I might be hard on the "performance" places out here, but after my experiences, can you blame me? So, they lose my business. If spy can get it done for me, than what the heck. I'll have it done. At least I know it'll get done right, I trust spy's choices in where to go to get stuff done.
Sorry if I come of as upset, but just thinking about how much I was ****ed around by these places out here ****es me off. I do have a coupple places to do internal engine work, for a good price, but that's all I want them to do. The internals. I don't want them touching the urbo. No reason really, I just want to install it myself. At least then I could say I did SOME of the performance work myself.

Where did I go? A regular old muffler shop. It was a meineke or some crap. Right down route 63 just into new haven, right past the athenian diner, burger king, tommy k's, and the ice cream place on the left. It also also on left left. Directly next to the ice cream place. (well, it's on the left if you come from the seymour/waterbury, naugatuck area down 63. if you come the other way, it's on the right, of course. :D )
