Anyone ever tried to buy an SC/T hood from the dealer? I don't mean an '03 or '04 SC/T GA, but buying one for a '99-'02. I've been thinking of getting one but don't feel like paying $700 for the hood, $125 freight charge, then say at least $300 for a good prep & paint job. Pontiac's website says the hood is available as an option for $1k...think a dealership would sell you just the hood, or would they laugh in your face?

yea they do sell them, thats what i ended up getting on my 03 after the accident.
I could check on the price I was charged but i dont have my estimate here :\

The dealership wanted $900 for it near me, but not sure if that included it being painted or not.

Yea...I went to the dealership to inquire about the hood... the guy looked at me with a smile, picked up a massive dildo...and proceeded to say "$900 unpainted...would you like to buy it?"

So it end up being cheaper if you just join our group buy (see topic titled "SD Group Buy!!") and you can get it for the cheapest price you'll ever see it.

Damn...I guess that answers that question. I would do the group buy if I had the funds right now, but I don't. I guess it's gonna be the 1-in-100000 chance of junkyard hunting until I've got the cash.

I have a 2002 GAGT, anf just bought the sc/t hood & spoiler this year (2003) for my car. And got the dealership to paint, and install the items on my car.............

yeah the dealer will give it to you easily if you ask them, except for the fact that it is an INSANE ripoff. The guy told me 2000 dollars Canadian to order it, have it painted and installed.

Yeah, that'd work, unfortunately the SC/T hood and the SD Ram Air hood are two totally different hoods.

Yeah, Erika told me she paid about $1350 from the dealer for the hood, paint, and install...hipfan, how much did it cost you? And I don't think it'd matter to me if it was SC/T or SD...either way, a ram air hood would be nice, but it's just that I don't have the cash at this time.

The group buy gives you the choice of either hoods...there's no limit to how many people can jump in on this chance for a price reduced hood...

That seems nuts to me. That much money for a non-functional wanna be ram air hood (no offense to those of you with these types of hoods). I bought the *** ram air hood for a couple key reasons.

1. Actually functional and pushes the air in just the right place, right over my intake.
2. Price, alot of people have said that the SD and the SC/T hood from pfyc.com are reall ruff and need alot of work in the shop. That can get pricey.
3. Lasts forever and OEM quality, break points same as stock when in accident.
4. Appearance is very cool lookin, pics dont do it justice at all, gotta see it in person to believe it.
5. Easy install, took me and a buddy litteraly 10 minutes to throw on and lined up perfectly with no adjusting at all.

There is more but these reasons are why i bought there hood overall. I am not bashing these hoods at all, i just favor functionality and not just looks. I had to have the best of both worlds.

No i payed 850. I was the last of 2 people to get it at that price. I have heard from people that SD isnt functional. And alot of people have said that the hood is very ruff and ya just cant throw it on like ***'s hood. One thing i forgot is it isnt fiberglass, i dont much like fiberglass. Actually any hood can be functional its just that from my understanding is that those hoods werent meant to be, just looks, nothing else. Plus the opening to where the air comes in, is directly over the intake, very nice feature to tell ya the truth.

My local body shopped offered me a RAM AIR hood (OEM) off of a 2000 Grand Am GT (RED) my car is black. The red GAGT was in an accident and had a small crack in the hood... THe guy wanted a new hood (insurance) and told the body shop they could keep it. Anyways, they told me that they would repair that crack, sand it down and paint it black, and put it on for $1000... I mean, it is a refurbished hood, I dont know if thats really a good deal or not.. What do you all think???

Yeah, they won't give you one off of a car in the lot. you gotta special order it from them. it was around 955 for the hood, and about 350 for paint/labor, and then tax on top of that. the only good thing about getting it done thru the dealer, is that you are not responsible for any damage before it is on your car. if you buy from online, once it leaves their hands to be shipped to you, you are SOL if anything happens in transit. that's why i got it thru the dealer.

oh, and BadGT...i'd spend the extra couple hundred and just get the SC/T hood. either that or i'll sell you my perfect condition silver OEM hood for $1000!!!

that's why you order the hood from www.gmpartsdirect.com

And people who push "X" hood because it "pushes the air in true ram air style" are only kidding themselves. Come on, do you really think it is that big a performance benefit???? I'll put money down a CAI setup provides more HP.

coupe

You dont get HP from it. But you do get a nice cool engine specially on hot days. Haveing a *** hood is nice in that the air comes in right on top of the CAI which produces HP because it is sucking in cold air which produces HP. So in a way it does help with HP in a way. With out a CAI all ya get is a cooler engine bay. Someone has to understand what im sayin. Its hard to explain.

This isn't the days of no MAF, ECU's, circular air filters with direct ram air through a cowling, etc.

I don't believe in Ram Air compared to other options nowadays. If you do and it makes you happy, so be it. But a few degree's here or there in the intake temps or engine bay is not going to provide a significant HP difference for performance.

Its still better than having a hood and no openings at all. All that heat just sittin in there with no way out or way to cool it down. Im sure its better than just a couple of degrees difference also.

I paid like 770 and got mine painted for almost nothing. Brand new, it helps to have hookups.

Thanks for getting back to me hipfan39. That cost is about what my local dealer quoted me. I am going to get a friend of mine that works at GM to order the hood\spolier for me in the spring to save some cash.

I live in Oshawa.
