Are you using a DV camcorder to take those pics? Kinda looks like it. It you have a regular digital camera and can take off the time and date (and get them not so grainy), I'd like to use some of those for the site as well. I must say that that is a very nice looking P&P job....

Good job on the heads...

What did you have done to the Heads ?

Who did them ?

How much did it cost ?

What is the name and or location of the shop ?

Yeah dude, nice heads! I wanna know who did them too. I'm kinda not impressed with my RSM heads. They didn't even touch the back side of the valve guides in the exhaust port, and they certainly aren't gasket matched. Thinking about having someone else look at them and see if they can do better.:(

Get you get those flow benched or cc'd?

95-GT
09-22-2003, 10:56 PM
nope. Cost me $350 to do. Local shop....I will give the name out after I get the dyno numbers in about 2 weeks :D

There is a 5-angle valve job, completly port matched on the intakes and exhaust, plus the combustion chamber is worked pretty good too.

kubiache

$350 huh? That rocks. When you do your own heads, do you need new hardware to get full benefits from them, or are the stock valves, guides, etc. fine?

95-GT
09-22-2003, 11:12 PM
If you do your own heads...I wouldnt recommend making it for bigger valves...leave that up to the pros.

Thought you said you had higher tension springs in there. Maybe that was someone else.....

95-GT
09-23-2003, 05:43 AM
I do...but I thought you mean like actually what was done to the head itself as far as porting goes.

No I meant "your own" as opposed to buying heads from RSM or anyone else. I should say when the shop did your heads, did they replace any hardware. Just higher tension valve springs? Did the shop provide those for you?

All the hardware is new. They are stock valves but modified with a "cut/ridge" into them.

Looks good.

When are you going to post where you got them done at? I need to replace my heads ASAP....so maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to drive up to Michigan and have em ported before hand.

I will have my extra set of 3400 heads here now...I can have them done for you and sent to your home to save you the drive. I am going to install them now...should be done tonight. I will post the location AFTER i get dyno numbres to see how good they really are :D. Also, I have a extra set of head gaskets, lower and upper intake gaskets if your intrested in buying from me...$150 shipped. I paid almost $200 for them. They are also the new redesigned LIM gaskets that wont leak

PontiacGT2K
09-23-2003, 01:14 PM
Nah, I'm good with the gaskets, just bought some of those off ebay for $20.

LOL Nice Time! The Guy Who did my head took 75Minlol. It took me a fue hours to rip apart my low intake, but then again it was my first time doing it.

Mabay I dident see But did you end up getting your heads decked? I got mine Decked about .020 but then again i'm N/A right now.

Day 1:

Everything went fine...total time of removal was 1 hour, 30 minutes. Then after that...everything went to hell. I went to the store to get the **** I needed...engine prelube, RTV, thread sealent, oil, etc. But then I forgot I needed to tap the LIM since my hosing isnt a pressed fitting like the 99+'s...its a screw in. So I spent like 2 hrs looking for the tap. Then I forgot other things..had to go back again. Then another thing...had to go back again. I ended up breaking 3 studs on the x-over due to rust. No biggie...Just had to find my old engine and pull them off that one. But by the time this came around...it was dark and I was hacing trouble finding tools. I did my best...but I couldnt go on any longer when I, swear on the holy bible, saw someone walking by my house, then just disappeared. So after that, I said I was going to call it and night and put everything away.

Total of what I got done today:
Removal of the top 1/2 of the engine.
Installed Heads
Installed Exhaust manifolds
Installed X-Over
Installed Pushrods and roller rockers.
Installed the lower intake manifold.
The following is what I still have to do:
Get new o-rings for the injectors.
Install the fuel rail.
Install the valve covers.
Put the upper plenum back on.
Hook up all electrical.
Hook up the air filter and all vacuum lines.
Bolt downpipe back on.
Add coolant/water.
Change oil.
Then I get to start her up and do the break-in process. Then next week comes a dyno tune. I am hoping to be completed by 3 PM tomorrow afternoon, and have pictures by Friday afternoon - high quality at that. I will keep you guys informed on how I do.

Lesson learned today: Always plan more time to do a project then expected.

How much did you deck them?

I have a question. When the heads are ported and the ports are bigger, what do you do for gaskets? Or are the ports the same size, but matched and only the insides of the heads are ported?

bszopi
09-24-2003, 10:20 AM
The stock head castings actually have smaller ports than the gaskets. That is why people usually mention "gasket matching". They port out the heads and manifolds to match the gasket size, therefore getting the most area out of the ports.

95-GT
09-24-2003, 11:23 AM
Yep. Brad, also...I can write up a whole thing for 60DegreeV6.com on how to remove the heads and intakes for you.

bszopi
09-24-2003, 11:28 AM
That would be cool. I had something before the site crash, but all I did was just basically rewrite the procedure out of the service manual. I was going to basically do the same thing this time, but only incorporate pictures into it. But hey, if you want to write something up, that would be great! We are always looking for more help to get more info up. Ben and I can only do so much, especially when we both have so many other things going on...

95-GT - how long did the shop take to do your heads?

TheShizzy
09-26-2003, 09:34 AM
did you get your intake manis done also? if not, are you planning on it?

95-GT
09-26-2003, 12:32 PM
Kubiache- A little less then 2 weeks.

TheShizzy- Intakes were already done.

I feel the differance...but whats holding me back bigtime is me running stock exhaust. I should have that fixed in less then 2 weeks.

Do you have the old 3.4s out of like an old monte or GP, or a newer 3400? Your sig says one thing your avatar says another. If you have the 3.4l are they the same heads as a 3400? i ask because once you reveal to the world where you got this done, I'd like to get mine over there and it'll be really convenient to already have your heads to go by.

95-GT
09-26-2003, 03:06 PM
I was limited to room in my avatar...but its the 3400 out of the newer grand ams (99+)

Alright kubiache and 95-gt where can i get my car dynoed at? You guys gotta know since we all live no more than 20 min from each other. Sorry to jack your thread but you guys dont answer e-mails or pm's. Thanks guys.

I don't know where grandville is, but sterling hts and grand rapids are on opposite sides of the state dude. If you're anywhere near detroit then there are about 10 dyno shops you could go to. We are actually planning a group dyno day in the spring (late march or early april) at advanced chassis dyno in sterling hts. If we get more than 10 cars then you can get three pulls for $60 a piece. If you don't want to wait that long tell me where you're close to and I'll make a recommendation.

Grandville is two minutes from me. You've never PMed me! I wish you would I need some GA people around here.

95-GT - Once you do reveal the top secret location of the place that did your work, would it be simple enough for me to just go in with my heads and say "I'll have what he's having" and they'll have the specs on hand still?
