I have searched and found how various people have popped their circular "pod" vents out...which way was easiest for you? I am painting just the ring, but what was the easiest way of pulling them out for you?

I used a bent coat hanger and just grabbed one of the clips, pulled up and yanked the vent out.

I have an online guide for painting the interior

i just turned it so the vent was closed and pulled REALLY hard till it popped out. now that mine are all painted i have a question for some people that have put them back in. mine go in pretty easy but don't seem to lock into place. has anyone else had this problem? is there a certain way they have to go back in? please fill me in thanks1

if you look real close you will see three areas where the foam padding is missing, this is where the clips go. let me hop on paint real quick and make a diagram.
yea i kinda noticed where the three pin lock things go. so just place them kinda in the right area and just keep pushing? one snapped right into place. and the rest i've had trouble with that is why i was wondering if they need to be rotated a certain way or what. i don't know. they just don't lock that's all i know
nice avatar by the way. real nice

the reason WHY you don't just RIP the vents out is because it can
1. break the clips
2. affect the fitment
which is why yer having the fitment issue yer having, chances are you either displaced the clip fitment on the vent or messed with the inner tubing in the dash that the clips 'clip' into.

try a different vent, sometimes one wont fit into one of the holes but will into another. try rotating the clips too. if i can do it at 11:30 with no light, i'm sure you can do it too.

I eliminated this problem by (accidently) breaking half the clips off. oh well the coats of paint stick em in there pretty good who needs clips.
