Hey guys, I called up my local exhaust shop today asking for a ballpark figure on a custom flow 80 catback. I told em I wanted 2.5" piping from the cat back, the Flowmaster muffler we all use (42583), and a couple Magnaflow tips (35168). He told me that the Mag tips were about $200 apiece...total cost of everything would be around $750-800 installed. wtf So I asked him if I got generic tips what it would do to the price, he said it'd drop around $200...still, that's $600 where a lot of guys on here say they don't pay much more than $350 for custom exhaust. You would think if the tips were $200 each it would drop the price by around $400...I don't know, but anyway, does $750+ for a custom catback seem right to you?

No way man... That's crazy high. You could get a Borla for less money.

Mine was less than 300 out the door with stainless tips. The same flowmaster. This was at midas. I'd call another shop.

mine was 250 with the flowmaster 80 at a local muffler shop with 2.5 piping and stainless tips.
I would definitely try somewhere else. That is way too expensive.

Yeah that's ridiculously high.

With my SLP kit/magnaflow muffler/magnaflow tips....I paid $380 total. Installed myself in 1 hour.

That's what I figured...I mean seriously, $600 for piping, muffler, generic tips, and labor? I'm heading down there tomorrow afternoon to chat with them...they're a pretty well-known shop around here, they do quite a bit of business...maybe there was some misunderstanding during my phone conversation with them? Who knows...well, I'll keep everyone updated on the situation as things develop.

I paid ~$200 for Magnaflow muffler, Magnaflow Stainless tips, and install

Typically, it's closer to $300.

I wouldn't waste your time with that shop... sounds like they're trying to jerk you around. I'd get AT LEAST two shops to give you a quote before you make a decision.

Yeah, so I went down to that shop today. First off, the guy had these generic dual 3 1/2" tips...priced at $90 each. I was like, umm ok, I can get Borla intercooled tips for $85 each online. Then the guy's all like "whoa! tell me where!" Yeah, sure. So we keep talkin, apparently the piping would just be pressure bent, not mandrel bent...he said he'd have to special order the piping and bend it and all that. The quote he gave me for the whole deal was $550...yeah, right. I asked him what it'd be if I just did the muffler and tips, and he said around $400. As I was leaving, I told him I'd go shop around, get a couple more quotes, and give him a call back...then he's like "well you're not going to meineke or midas are you? they don't weld, they just clamp it on." Yeah, right. Needless to say, that's the last time I'll be going to this shop.

OMG....Mieneke and Midas both weld....that's ridiculous. Go to Meineke, Midas, or Merlins' (if that's in your area) if you're going to any shop.

Hey AntTheGreat,

I did the same thing, went into a place in my town and told them I was price shopping to install this for my 99GAGT and showed him a pic of the whole SLP exhaust setup. He looked it over and said they'd install it for $60-80. I guess that's a good deal.

Before my girls dad got out of jail i went to a couple shops about instaling my SLP and they said labor only. $60-120 for labor. Thank god he got out in time.

Id do it myself for NOTHING, or have a shop do it. No more than $50, as I have been quoted this twice!

Price depends on your area. I was gonna do it myself then he called and said to bring it to the shop. So i did. Now he is all involved with my car, he really likes it. He cant waite for the headers to come in.

did it myself, but a shop quoted me 60 bucks for the entire SLP install, even removal of the stock exhaust! That was at a Napas!

All these points aside, you guys have to realize what labor rates are nowadays. Even normal crappy shops charge $60-90 an hour depending on where you live.

So, if a guy charges you the flat rate of one hour to rip your stock exhaust off and install the new one, regardless of how easy the job is.....you're looking at $60-$90 right there.

screw aftermarket.you want loud, just install a cutout.louder than a flowmaster and cheaper on the install.

Very true but that may not be the best thing to have open all the time just to be loud. I plan on getting that also but only so i can be a jerk off when i want to be. I am wondering what it will sound like with my headers. I am hoping even louder.
