Ok, here's my problem. I've done a search and I've been through all of the old threads on this site regarding this topic, but I haven't seen a good explaination as to how to disconnect the coupling on the passenger side of the fuel filter. Mine is the black 4-pronged design, so it doesn't have the white clips as on the 99+ cars. My question is this: It looks like the prongs have been broken off in a previous attempt to remove it somewhere along the history of this car. I was wondering if that will affect the removal of the coupling. I was also wondering if the old black clip is part of the filter or if it stays on the line. (the new filter has the nicer white clip...do I use that after the old one is out?) Am I supposed to be squeezing the black clip or pushing it. If it's pushing it, I'm not sure which way I'm supposed to be pushing on this black piece. Do I push it in towards the line and away from the filter? Do I slide a screwdriver or something under/inside the clip? Do I fight it or should it come out easily? Do I push or pull the filter housing while doing this?

It's amazing that something so seemingly simple could cause such a pain. This should be a snap, but I admit I spent a half hour fiddling with it before stopping for fear of bending the line or breaking the coupling.

Thank you for your time to anyone who responds. I don't need any info on how to disconnect the battery, release the pressure, or take off the nut on the other side. My question is about better understanding the coupling. (I won't resort to cutting it off and replacing with rubber line as I've seen mentioned in the past) Also, I've noticed that half of the responses from people on this topic in the past have been to be easy on yourself and just spend the $40 taking it to the dealership. Please don't add that comment because sadly, that isn't an option for me. Something along the lines of stubborn car guy pride. Thanks again. I appreciate any help.

Hey guys, I posted this a week ago and I haven't managed to get any comments back. Surely someone out there has replaced their filter themselves and can give me some insight. If anyone has first hand knowledge for me, I would greatly appreciate any feedback you could give me.

Thanks.
