View Full Version : XM & snow

Ok it's getting to be that time of year (snow season) and I've yet to have my XM through the winter. I'm curious how the reception is when it's snowing outside. I've never had a problem when it rains, but since XM is technically (out in the sticks) line of site, would the snow throw off the signal (like satelite tv)? I assume I have to make sure the antenna outside the vehicle is not covered in ice or snow.
On a side note, my sisters office has wireless broadband service and the antenna on the roof is self heating, it'd be nice if the XM antenna's were the same. I might "treat" mine with RainX or something like that to help keep the ice off of it.
Any bad experiences or suggestions for snow?

last winter there was 24 inches of snow covering my antenna, i started my car, and while cleaning snow off the front, my xm kicked on (still fully covered)! You should have no problems! The power that is generated from the satellites for xm is MUCH MORE powerful then that of satellite tv! So thats why even in a good rain storm you lose sat tv, and still have xm! I am not a tech wiz, but the people at xmfan.com will be able to anwser any questions on xm. (I hope it is not illegal to talk about another forum, if so, I bow my head in shame...apologize....and put my wrist out to get slapped by a ruler)

guru i dont think snow effects line of sight, line of sight is more like dense objects blockign the signal (mountains, buildings, etc) snow shouldn't interfere with xm... but you say satellite tv suffers from snow? so i dont know... snow doesn't effect cb radios and the like, tvs might transfer an obscene amount of bandwidth and the slightest interference will show... i'd be interested to know how it works i cant imagine it being a problem tho ... the snow that is
