This is a continued thred from http://www.grandamgt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=250571#post250571 but made new one to seperate my issues.

OK I made sure I was on E today when I went to texaco as you guys suggested. Well my last fillup at shell was 13.555 gallons and I filled it as soon as the gas light turned on. This time around I drove with light on for a additional 30 miles and was below E. This was thru out a 3 day period plus I pushed it just to save a little money since texaco here has a 6 cent discount per gallon on friday. Yup im cheap. LoL

Anyway I was well below any amount of gas I have ever pushed down to in this car and it took 13.396 to fill it. I even tried to sqeeze a bit more in thinking the pump was broken some how but just wouldnt take any more.

Shell = 13.555 gallons with 2 lines over E... thats where the gas light turns on.
Texaco = 13.294 below the E..

Is shell cheating the meter?

I also got some injector cleaner and octane booster just cuz I thought It would help clean things more.

last fillup also went 290 miles averaging 21MPG which is lowest ever..

I did notice a boost in power after getting texaco and dumping the additives.

Still waiting on K&N filter to come in. any more suggestions on how to improve this gas millage? I mean its a 2.4L 4 cyl.. gotta get better then this.

Wow that is pretty bad. I got 310 on my tank as of right now, and I could prolly put another 20 on before I'm out. And that's after going to the track for 10 runs! Wow man.....that's no good.

I noticed a huge increase in mpg after my header/exhaust install, as well as drop in intake. I think that makes your a/f lean out a bit, causing you to expend less fuel.

As for people cheating the meter....I don't think so. I go to the same Mobil every single time I fill up, and it always tells me different numbers and my guage can be on the same spot. Sometimes they don't fill up to as much, it all depends I think.

Gasoline volumetric density varies a lot according to ambient temerature and most fuel pumps now compensate for it according to the temperature when you fill up. Has the outside temperature changed a lot (like 10+ degrees) between your two fill ups?

It's Illinois. The temperature varies here from -20 to 100 degrees farenheit. So I don't really remember.....but I'm sure that's the explination for it.

310?!?! There's only been one time that i've gotten 295... but usually I only get like 260 or somethin.... and I dont really drive too agressively anymore... what gives? I just changed my fuel filter... so now am I losing gas faster????

I dunno man. Seriously, headers and exhaust gave me a huge jump in mpg. Can't wait to install the CAI to see if that does as well.

I average 30 MPG when I keep the tach at 2000 rpm or below when taking off. What RPM range do you guys usually take off in to get the mileage you are getting?

I get around 25mpg, and I drive like I stole the car 90% of the time.

Im sure the temp has changed here by over 10 degrees so you guys are probably right. Right now I got about 100miles from last fillup and am at 3/4 tank but always seems to go down fast after the half mark so not expecting 400miles on one tank.
Still waiting for my airfilter dammit =(
Do the stock Grand Am SE come with platinum plugs? If this helps any the GM site says change after 100,000 miles. Ive never driven that many miles on one set of plugs but ive never had platinum plugs either.

I sometimes get on it on this car but not very often. and not for very long. maybe to make a yellow light (LoL) or to pull a pass on granny. Other than that I drive just over speed limits by like 5 mph and take offs are under 2000 RPM im sure.. well have to look at it today.

My K&N filter has arrived and after removing the old filter it is a lot more cloged up then I had originally thought. Hope this does the high MPG trick.

If the paper filter was pretty much clogged, the new K&N might do the trick for you.

I very much prefer texaco. Other than Texaco, my wife knows which gas station she's allowed to go to :D. I can tell a difference between cheap and good quality gas.

OK still getting about the same MPG.. Ive put in fuel injection aditives into my last 2 fillups but didnt seem to help. I have installed my K&N filter as well. What else could be causing this little 2.4 Litre 4 cyl motor with less then 35K miles on it and fairly unabusive driver to only get 25MPG?? Im running out of ideas. everything checked out ok 2 months ago when it got inspected for a sticker. Think it may need a tune up anyway or if it did it would have shown up on the inspection test with high pollution of some sort? Tune ups for this car is every 100K miles but something gotta be costing me MPG. Someone help :(

Do you smell alot of gas in the exhaust? I did in my car, I took it to the dealer and they said the computer needed an update :wft: When i got the car back it did not jump as hard as it did before. I just think they mess with the timing. My mpg did improve, now i get 250 on a full tank. I do keep the RPM above 3k most of the time and it is 100% city driving. Most i got once was 275.

I do hate the fuel gauge because it make you think you getting good MPG. For it to move off F takes a long time. Then from F to 1/2 is so quick.

I got 17 when I first bought my 2002 GrandAmSE with a 3.4L at 25000 miles, thats when i drove it as if the gas peddle only had the option of being all the way up or all the way down....(Don't try this in Stop-n-Go traffic, or you'll lose a little coolant when it gets too hot)...

Well, anyway since then (at 30k now)i've tossed in a new filter(still have stock airbox), and some SeaFoam and I have gotten 22MPG when being driving with takeoffs not usually going above 2500rpm

The thing i've noticed is that everyone in the 2.4L 4cyl seems to be getting the same gas mileage as the bigger 3.4L buddies, which I think is sad, but it seems too often that people get below 25mpg with that engine

Your engine is working hardcore to keep up with normal driving habits, so the gas mileage goes down..

Read up on fueleconomy.com (i think that was the site) and my car is suppose to get 31MPG highway and 22MPG city.. guess 25MPG average with some highway and some city is about right.. Damn and I just spent $40 on a air filter it didnt need.. =)
