View Full Version : Anyone have any good ideas for getting locking lug nuts off with a warped lug nut bit

Ive got a problem. My rear wheels have two locking lug nuts on them. When i took it in for "service" (read about it in the anything goes section) they used air tools on it, and put the locking nut on way too far. So, the actual wheel stud is nearly protruding out of the end of the locking lug nut. So, there is no way to get it in far enough to get the nut off the lug. Any ideas here?

I say they they broke it, they fix. Take it back and ask them to remove it for you, and replace it while they are at it. But, from past results with them, I would bring a friend or your dad or someone with you for 'backup' and not leave the car out of your sight.
Other than that, you can try to die grind the bulge off of the end of the lug nut, enough for the key to grip it. You will still have to replace the locking lug nut, though.

Did my best to grind out the bit today, no joy. The locking nut is so screwed up that nothing is going to hold in there. Ill take it to discount tire on monday and have them hit it with their fun tools.

Here's what I have done on another car. Get an old or cheap socket that will fit tightly around the lug and bang it on with a hammer. then use a air gun or breaker bar to get it off.
Or bring it back to the the place that messed it up.
