so starting out with a fresh engine/car has allowed me to experiment with intake setups a bit...

Experiment 1: K & N drop in.
helps air flow, but no noticeable performance increases IMO

Experiment 2: K & N drop in + resonator removed.
just sounds a little bit better. nothing much here.

Experiment 3: K & N Cone, Airbox lid removed, SC/T hood blowing on cone.
Sound is AWESOME. you can hear a whistle as it shifts! The performance increased a noticable amount, but nothing huge. Definetly the way to go with you dont want to do CAI if you have the hood. The hood blowing on the cone reduces heat soak alot, so it doesnt bog down.

Next experiment: Adding a tube to where the resonator used to hook up, and run it into the fender like a CAI. hopefully this will increase airflow even more.

Anyone have any other ideas besides CAI? This is for people who dont want to cut anything or spend $150 on an intake.

Rent a Mustang... ha, but seriously forks, keep up the good work, I've heard of people unscrewing the EGR stuff, don't know if it will cause a vacuum problem, but it cost roughly $0.00

Yup.

Cone filter NO heat shield = sucked. Major heat lag during the summer time,

Cone Filter With lexan heat shiel wrapped in header wrap = AWSOME! No lag anymore. Sound is there as well.

Cone Filter with Lexan heat shield wrapped in header wrap WITH 3" PVC = Now we can see a difference. After removing the bendable and twisted up black stock tubing and installing my own straight down near the fog light area.. much better. I think this made my difference in my 15.514 run in Michigan to my 15.2 runS in norwalk ohio.

Cone Filter with Lexan heat shield wrapped in header wrap WITH 3" PVC WITH SC/T hood (opened scoops) = We shall see soon enough!! I can tell you its MUCH MUCH louder than when i had my stock hood. Im pretty sure there will be some small performance gain, especially since im 110% sure the hood works hehe (remember the sucked in grasshopper stuck to my air filter, yeah hehe)

when ur moving yes but when ur sitting it gets tons of heat soak:(

im gonna do some downtown east lansing rush hour testing tonight, hehe.
Also I need to figure out a way to run a pipe into the fender where a CAI would normally be and connect it to the old resonator pipe.
and I like blacks idea. pipe where ram air used to be. mmmm....

Must warn you now... you CAN install 3" piping.. BUT it requires you to CUT into your fenders a little bit and also you need to put 3 ELBOW type pieces together or you wont have any luck getting the piping down through the fender and having space to put the bumper and fenderwell piece back together.

damn.
maybe I can do the dryer vent stuff from home depot, or the black stretchy tubing from autozone :)

Nope :p

I thought of takin the easy way out as well, if you go that route, they are very thin. They could VERY easily rip or tear, and also wont be as tolderable to heat. It Still does get hot in your fenderwells too.

Cut the fender... rite near the battery in that little area. Piece of cake when you start hacking away:thumbs:

welp, did some heavy city driving. temp gauge never got above 3 notches above 200. normally it's like 1.5 notches above. once I start moving though it drops to lower than stock temp.
everything has it's trade offs i guess

Yeah, mine used to have that little whistle when I had the CAI, Ramairhood, and the Heat Shield. Now I have a REALLY LOUD whistle. It's an Eaton. :D:thumbs:

I think the best idea NA is to shield the tube once it comes into the engine bay with header wrap, and then a nice cover to make it look good. And keep the filter in the wheelwell, with ducting for ramair.

Cut the gills and cut some of the metal. You can always hide the cut later. Place back the stock airbox and place that matting over the cut that needs to be removed for the CAI tube.

well im goin to the track on friday. I'm gonna see the differences between stock ram air and a open cone.
