I have heard that the new 2004 GAs have a MP3 player. I know it's a stock setup but is it possible for it to smoothly go in my 99 GA without looking much different than I have it now (stock system now)?

I believe only the head unit that comes with the Monsoon system has MP3 capability so you'd probably need the whole Monsoon set-up.

Might as well go with aftermarket in that case, it'll cheaper and probably better quality.

Its a different size opening in the dash (assuming the 04's continue to use the double din) and I believe the mounting bracket behind it is different as well.

Not necessarily. Any databus headunit could work in our cars. I've disconnected the monsoon before and turned on the radio. The radio did not read "monsoon" on the display upon turn on. Once I plugged back in the monsoon amp and turned on the radio, it read "monsoon."

Well, from I've seen the head units that come with the Monsoon system and the other ones don't have the same wiring in the back so if he doesn't have the Monsoon amp to connect to the plugs won't match.

I didn't think about the different faceplate size but that's also a good point.

Oh, I should have pointed out that this is for 2001+ models. The '99-'00 models need some wire modifications inorder to work with the new databus headunits. Don't quote me on this though. I can't remember all the details but I do remember a 2000 Alero GLS owner swapping out the old generation radio for the new generation databus radio. He had to do something for it to work. Can't remember.

Also, a new trim piece for the radio area is needed. The old radios found in '99 - '00 models use a 1.5 din slot whereas the databus radios use a 2 din slot.

why would you ever go with another stock setup?? you can find a good aftermarket mp3 unit for under $200. but i guess this is coming from an audio freak.

I wonder if it can work in a 2001? I like the factory look.

So what would I need to do to get it to work in my 99? Maybe no one has done the MP3 swap but has anyone swapped Premium for Monsoon?

Try Aleromod.com for the Alero owner that Vintalage was refering to....
