Okay guys I need some help. I want to get new performance cams for my car. To refresh your memories I have a 1996 GAGT w/ the 2.4L LD9. The current cam numbers are
Intake Lift .354 w/ a duration @ .050 and 198
Exhaust Lift .345/6 w/ Duration @ .050 and 187
I want to upgrade my cams and gain about 30 HP but I do not want to have to do a huge rebuild other than the new valve sorings and other misc. valve accesories.Cash is tight. If you guys could help me out with some numbers that would work I would greatly appreciate it. Any help right now would be great, thanks

you can go with
mantapart
rsm racing
then you have the secret cams
The intake cam is from a 1995 (ONLY) 2.3L Quad 4 engine. The eighth digit in the VIN is a letter D that can be found in 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24, Pontiac Sunfire GT, and Oldsmobile Achieva. It is GM part #24574239 ($197.64). If you're looking under hoods, the casting number on the cam is 245/742 (which IS the same number as the 2.4L LD9, but has 0.360" of lift), and the casting number on the cam housing/carrier is 24574057.
The exhaust cam is from a 1990-94 (only) 2.3L Quad 4 engine. The eighth digit in the VIN is a letter D as well that Can be found in 90-94 Pontiac Grand Am, Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais, Acheiva, and Buick Skylark. It is GM part #22545390 ($197.64). The cam casting numbers are 255/455 (which IS the same number as the HO cams, but only has 0.3750" of lift, not 0.410") and the housing/carrier itself is 22542963.

The "Pimp Swap"
Done right hear in winnipeg manitoba! I know the guy who first did it!
The secret cams are said to give 15-20 h.p. depending on your other mods....such as intake and exhaust. The numbers on these cams are about as high as you can go without running into problems. You can probably find some at a junk yard or on jbody.org for sale. Prices range from about $100-$200. I have mine....now I just have to put them in (I'm lazy :)). They *should* put me into the 14's :D.

Lets see... cams, new intake manifold and 62mmT/B on top of the CAI, Exhaust and Nitrous, I here 14's calling my name:D Now i just have to find valves, springs, retainers with an upgraded fuel system,100 shot of Nitrous and who knows, maybe a HIGH 13??
With the 100 shot alone (depending how the motor hold up) you'd be high 13's ;). I've seen it done in J-body's with the same mods I have with only a 75 shot. I f I sprayed a 55 I'd be low 14's.......which I am thinking about doing :D. just a 55 though....nothing higher :).

wow, thats insane, lol, i live in waukesha, and i want your car so bad, lol, i love cavi's.
small world
Derek
^ I love my cavalier. There a few quick ones in Wisconsin. Speedracer Z, (brian....runs mid 13's) Changeforabutton (nick....hasn't run yet) Crash (ben.....smashed hood after motor got finished .....hasen't run yet) all have boosted Ld9's. Plus many other low 15 second N/A J's and a few 14's N/A. I'll probably be high 14's in a week or 2 ;) although 15.1 isn't bad for having only intake/exhaust/ and motor mounts :D. This cold weather is perfect for the track!
Hopefully one day I can be Booooooosted too.
What does your car look like (jazzman)? Maybe i've seen you around.

DON"T CUT YOUR EIBACH'S!!! A friend of mine did that to his cav and had nothing but trouble with it. Find a set of coil overs if you want to sit lower. Trust me.

No, one of my friends form back home in Maine and is going to the junkyard this weekend and is going to pull them for me. He is a mechanic so he has teh tools that I don't have to get them out of the engine. He is going to also pull the .410for my car. I'm going to try both and see which one I like better in the car. Engine will be out of the car in Feb. so I can play around a little bit. This should be fun:D

What do you mean?
.410 cams won't fit. you'll need different cam towers or you'll need to notch lifter bores. Besides your car won't run real well with those cams.
I'd stick with the LO cams. :) It'll save you some time and work.

I was planning on some SERIOUS upgrades. I don't know though, if I did anything, I would do the supercharged 3800 swap that I have been working on. Been doing a "little" research into putting it into my car. I love having a cousin that is a GM wiz. 3.8 engine + 3.4 Z34 5spd = Frankenstein on 4 wheels. HE HE HE!!
The GM charger has hit high 13's with a stock 4.5 psi pulley ( other higher psi pulleys are available) and basic I/H/E bolt on's. You might want to really consider that if you want to go S/C. There is a way to get it installed your 96. People have put them on pre 00 cavaliers without any problems. It would save you waaayy more headaches. plus it's only $2,300 shipped right now.
I hear the cmas do wonders with FI.
But whichever way you choose.... Good luck! :)

If I do the swap I'm gonna take the engine out of a Bonneville SSEi (like my mom's engine if I can get her out of the house long enough) Just kidding. If I do swap the engines though, I want to get another Grand Am to do it too and keep this one going for show purposes or wait until the engine in this one hits 100,000mi. I'm @ 71,000 now.
