ETS is your traction control system. My understanding is it interrupts fuel flow for a second when it senses your wheels slipping, kind of like pumping the gas on and off. It is there to keep the car more stable in situations like cornering on wet surfaces. I dont see any reason to turn it off unless youre stuck pretty good in the snow and trying to get out.

Edit: just noticed you dont get snow where your from. hahalol

ETS- Enhanced Traction System
It is on most all GM front drive auto transmissions. It limits wheel slippage by controlling engine rpm's and using the front antilock system to slow or stop the drive wheels as needed. The only useful time I have found to turn it off is if you get stuck in snow or mud or when racing. Other than that I leave it on cause the car automatically turns it back on if you turn the ETS off and you restart the car.

Hope this helps.

Just so you know, it should always be off when racing at the track, or where ever you race.

Sorry but that's wrong, at least on the GA. ABS isn't used for traction control on our cars, it is on some other models though.

The GA's ETS system uses both fuel cutoff and transmission upshifting to control front wheel spin.

Just curious how that would work on my car, which is a 5-speed. It be interesting to know that if it somehow does upshift electronically in my manual, there must be a shift lever bypass. If so, maybe I can figure out how it's done, and utilize it to my advantage, and use it to shift into neutral when I need it so I can have a remote start for the winter. It gets COLD here in CT sometimes.
As of now, I can't use one since the car needs to be in reverse to take the key out.

Hope that all made sense.:D

ETS is only available on auto transmissions.

Ok....i'm confused then. I do have an "ETS" button, and it most definitely does work. What is it if it's not ETS then?

Hope that didn't sound rude or anything, i'm just genuinely (sp) confused here.

I just moved here so i hope it doesn't snow. I should be ok i'm sure if it does it's not too extreme.

I would guess that on manual transmissions all it does is cut the fuel supply to make the wheels stop spinning.

Wrong - I have it on my 02 GA SE 5 speed manual. I don't know how it works but I have it.

You do know they make remote start for straight drive cars, right?

All the remote starting systems for manual transmissions that I have seen require that the car be parked with the tranny in neutral and parking brake on.

My 2002 GA manual has to be parked in reverse in order to remove the key from the ignition. Living in upstate NY, there are several months that I would be using that remote start if I could install one.

Lol I said as much a few posts up in this same topic. Guess noone saw it. Anyway, if you figure out a way to put a remote start on your manual GA, let me know. I'll likewise let you know if I can figure out a way.

The ETS on the 5-speed only cuts off the fuel supply to bring down the RPM's. I havent tried it on a GM or GA, but my buddy forgot to turn it off on his 03 Mustang and went to dump it, it was so funny how it did nothing and just died.
