Just today I drove my car to the mall and it was running fine. (My fuel level was close to empty.) Everything was fine. I parked and came back to my car about an hour later. It started up, but when I backed out of the space, the engine bogged and the car was making a beefy/bassy noise while accelerating. The car would barely go. When in drive, I had to barely touch the gas to move otherwise the car would bog and slow down. The RPMS would go up, but the Speedometer needle would drop. When I floored it, the engine hesitated, stuttered, shuttered, then stalled. I made it to a gas station to fill up, which didn't change anything.
For a few months now, the engine has made a small, but noticeable vibration when in gear. I hadn't had time to check it out, but now I think it's caused this new problem.
My car is a 2000 SE 2.4L and I have 50K miles on it. I've recently changed the fuel filter. Air filter is fine. Vac hoses are fine. TPS is brand new. Need to change plugs. I'm not sure if the fuel pump is bad. In neutral, I can rev the car up fine. It doesn't really bog at all in neutral.
I was thinking maybe it's the MAP sensor, Vehicle Speed Sensors, or maybe the Catalytic Converter, but I don't really know. I'm no mechanic. I do need to change spark plugs, but I don't think that's the problem.
I don't think it would be the ignition system or the coils, because the car starts up just fine. Actually, it does sputter a little when it starts, but it DOES start. It idles fine at around 600RPM. In PARK and NEUTRAL it runs fine and revs up fine. In gear is bogs like crazy. I can't get over 15mph.
The SES light has not come on. This problems triggers the TRAC OFF light though. Also I noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the exhaust on occasion, which seems normal. I was told by an EX-mechanic, that if the CAT is bad, while idling, if you put your hand to the tail-pipe that you will feel small hot pellets hitting you. (well that never happened.) I'm all out of ideas. I'm bout to go to Autozone in the morning, order a crap load of sensors, see if they fix the problem and if not I'll return them.
Does anyone know or have an idea to what this problem is? Need help BAAAAAD. Thanks.
