View Full Version : Cold car suspension noise?

When the temperature drops to the 20's, I get an awful lot of knocking sounds coming from what sounds like it is coming from the suspension or wheels. It goes away after a couple miles, and is audible over the radio (not blasted - baby and 3yr old in car). It is audible mainly at low speeds.

If the temp is in the mid to upper 30's, I don't hear it.

I can't recall hearing this last year, but I also don't recall near as many 20's last year as we have had this year so far.

Any ideas? Or is it normal?

our front suspensions seem to make a some noises which is normal.....after driving one of the new malibu's you will think the noises we hear are normal.

Strut mounts, aye?.. Do you know an approximate cost for strut mounts?

I have an '03 with 9,000 miles.......My strut mounts are just fine.....Grand Am's are just creeky and get worse with age.

Your strut mounts are just fine because you have 9,000 miles.. I heard no noise at all with my GA until this front suspension noise. Other than that, my car is tight, and makes no other noise at 60K miles.. My car has impressed me so far.

From my experience, alot of mid-sized strut suspension cars have these noises when the temperature drops way down. Yes, it's the strut mount, but it doesn't necessarily mean you have a repair to do though. Bad struts aren't a seasonal thing. When they need replaced, it will be a year-round problem.

Actually, I got that noise on my '03 from the rear. The tech at the dealer said the rear bushings weren't properly lubricated at the plant. The rest of the time I was in the cold it never made the noise again after it was re-lubricated.

I've got an 03 with 16k miles and my strut mounts make a bang noise when I go over bumps and it's cold out...I'm taking everything apart in two weeks for lowering springs so I just might go ahead and replace them.
