The heater core is behind the firewall on the passengers side. They are, from what I've experienced, a MAJOR pain in the butt. I'd let a shop worry about mine, there are some things I just won't tackle!

From what I hear, you have to pull the dash to get to it.....

damn right...heater cores are no joke...let the professionals handle that stuff...i'll just stick to oil changes, changing plugs, and brakes...i mean i got pist off changing that blower resistor, and thats just one little panel under the dash...my theory is leave the big jobs for the big boys!

I replaced the heater core on my 89 GA. It was a pain in the ass, but only cause it takes so damn long to get to it. On the 89 I had to pull out the whole center console (everything all the way up to the dash...hvac, radio, everything) to get to it. IIRC it cost about $80 for the part and took me about 3-4 hours to do. Actually changing the heater core is easy though, its just a little radiator with two hoses connected to it....the hot water comes from your engine, through the heater core, and back out again...then air is just blown through the heater core (close to how your radiator works) and made hot before being blown into (or recirculated in) the car. Cost to get done at the shop is generally around $400 but I have seen people get it done for as low as $250 if they knew the mechanic.

Do you know for sure your heater core needs to be replaced? When they go youll get a sweet smell in the car, steam all over the windows and coming out the vents, and youll leak out all your water/anti-freeze through an evacuation tube under the car (its a mess).
