I've had mobil one since about, oh, 300 miles on the odometer. And it will stay that way. Fram filter.

STP or AC Delco filter

AC Delco filter and whichever major brand of oil is on sale. Last time I used Havoline 5W-30.
Tried Mobil 1 once but didn't see any difference.
Is the high mileage stuff worth using, or just marketing?? I'm at 60K now.

Royal Purple and K&N Filter.

Mobil 1 5w-30 every 3000 miles. I use Wix oil filters. After every thing I've read, I think I might start changing the oil every 4000 miles.
02-17-2004, 05:25 AM
Mobil 1 every 4,000 miles
AC Delco PF52 Filter
02-17-2004, 05:54 AM
5W-30 Castrol Syntec (Fully Wax Synthetic) during the winter, and 10W-30 Castrol Syntec in the summer.
I swear by this oil.. Mobil 1 is good too, but I prefer Castrol. I actually CAN tell a slight difference in the smoothness of the motor between Mobil-1 and Castrol.
Regular oil VS Synthetic, the difference is night and day.
Having Synthetic oil saved my engine in my Fiero when my waterpump impellar broke off and I continued to drive at 70 miles an hour for about 15 more minutes.. the temperature went WAY past the red into the black area (where it's never been before). The car burst all of it's fluid on the ground.. and the motor kept running (with no fluid).

Had mobil 1 SS since new and recently switched to redline. Thinking about trying mobil 1r, but I'll wait to see what kind of numbers I get with redline. I only use UPF-52 filters.

1st choice: German Castrol Syntec
2nd choice: Royal Purple
If all else fails: Mobil 1
Filters I'll usually use Wix but K&N or (God forbid) Quaker State if I forgot to stok on Wix and the parts store is closed.

mobil 1 syn. & fram
02-17-2004, 04:00 PM
got a stack of the ac delco filters and i use those (we had about a dozen from when we owned our 1992 grand am, and they use the same filter)
For oil, we use Halvoline, but after seeing that the majority of people are using synthetic oils like Castrol and Mobil 1 I might just switch. I usually drive lightly and so I change my oil about every 6000 miles when the change oil light comes on. I wouldn't ever go past 6000 miles no matter what though

Does synthetic oil look the same as non-synthetic oil when it comes out of the bottle?? That honey color
02-17-2004, 08:44 PM
Whats the differance the PF 47 and the PF 52 ?
02-18-2004, 03:50 AM
PF-52 has about twice the lenght the PF-47 has. That means twice as much filtering media, etc.
Most syntethic oils will look the same as regular oils but some special oil will be colored, like the Royal Purple (guess the colour) and German Castrol Syntec is bright green.

Oh okay cool
02-18-2004, 07:34 AM
Umm, so is it a better idea to use the bigger pf52 filter, are there any disadvantages to using that? Is it possible to void my warrenty with that or anything?

Check out this thread, 2002AmSE: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=000338
I use bigger filters whenever possible.

How many quarts of oil do the 2003 Grand AM GT's take?... I notice with my car that it heats up pretty fast (in winter).. so.... just curious to as how much oil they hold... I know atleast with my old car that took 4.5 quarts, it took like 20 minutes for that to warm up lol. with this car it takes like 10 minute max if that, maybe 7.
02-18-2004, 10:48 AM
The 3400 engine takes 4.5 imperial quarts, or 4.3 litres.
02-18-2004, 02:24 PM
Pennzoil or Valvaline 5w30 & fram sure grip filter.
