View Full Version : HOW TO: Install the FFP Underdrive Pulley
Scooter

I installed the FFP pulley about two weeks ago and took a photo-diary of the process. I finally got off my butt today and resized the pics and authored a detailed illustrated How To for the installation process.
This How To is long and has about 30 photos so I decided to put it up on my website. Click on the link below and then click "PROJECTS" on my site.

P.S. Check out my custom fiberglass speaker box while you're there. It's fairly new also.
A big thanks to Funky3821 for organizing the group buy. You rock!!
Feedback and comments are appreciated. Also let me know if you notice any typos or corrections as they are difficult to notice when you're working in HTML.

How is the performance difference with the pulley? I got mine with the group buy also, but won't be putting it on for awhile.

Wow, how does that make things faster with the car? I know that it makes the alternator, power steering, water pump, and a/c take less engine power and run slightly slower, but how does that increase power? It's probably a stupid question, I know it obviously is working for you, but how?

I'm lazy and don't want to type it all out so forgive the cut/paste from the website article. If you want more specific details about the performance gains please let me know.
Performance Notes: (Observations consistent through two full tanks of gas in normal commuting road conditions)
-Throttle response is much better
-Bottom end is noticable when the roads are wet. It's much easier to break traction.
-Top end response is Kick Ass!!!
-Water temperature is consistently 10-15 degrees cooler. I suspect that the heat exchange is more efficient when the coolant is moving slower.
-Gas mileage has gone up from 19 MPG to 23 MPG despite the fact that I've been heavier on the gas pedal since installing the pulley

That right there says it all. If the engine is giving out less power to these objects, it means more power to the wheels and tranny.

Think of it like a ten-speed bicycle. The front sprockets are the crank pulley(s). The pedals are the crankshaft and your feet are the pistons. The rear sprockets are your accessory pulleys. And the rear tire is the resistance created by the accessories, i.e. water pump, steering pump, alternator.
If you have the chain on the Big front sprocket and the small rear sprocket it takes a lot of power to turn the crank. The rear sprockets and tire turn at a fast rate.
Now if you switch the chain to the smaller front sprocket it takes less power to turn the crank at the same speed but the rear sprockets and tire turn at a slower rate.
The difference is that the pistons will create the same amount of power per explosion despite the smaller pulley.
Now let's pretend that the front crank on the bicycle has a drive shaft attached to it. There is less power required to turn the rear tire with the smaller sprocket. The leftover power is transfered into the drive shaft instead of the tire.
In our cars this leftover power is transfered into the transmission and drivetrain instead of the accessories.

Very comprehensive and informative write-up, Scooter. I plan to install mine when it gets warmer.

That's odd because my site is running on my webserver sitting in my closet. I've never seen a single popup. I'll be ****ed if my Linux box got 0wn3d.
The forum section, however, is free hosted so it may have some popups.
What browser were you using when you loaded up the site?

Yeah, I checked too and they definitely come from the forum.
So if you're checking out my site and don't want popups you have two options:
1. Don't click on the Forums link
2. Use Mozilla :)
Garbage free forums!!! I guess you get what you pay for.

Thanks,
That was the first time i played with layers in pant shop pro.
Edit: I got rid of the free hosted forums and set up my own PHP bulletin board. No more popups so don't be afraid to check it out.

Does your SC run off the serpentine belt? If so then a UDP will lower the output of your SC unless you get a smaller pulley for it too. It's the one thing keeping my brother getting something similar for his GTP.
Scooter: Where did you support the engine with the floorjack? Might be worth pointing out before someone new to this stuff (namely me  ) supports it by the oilpan.

no, it doesn't. it runs directly off one of the cams which is also connected to the power steering pump

Ive had mine for a while now. I didnt really put it in myself because I dont have access to good tools, but I helped a friend of mine put it in. Not a very hard process. Just make sure you dont damage the crank sensor ring and make sure it is locked in place otherwise it will cause misfires.
