Hey guys, My gfs 2001 Alero is making a weird noise up front. Its almost like a grinding noise. It will go along with the speed you are going. But if I put the trans in Neutral it still makes the noise, So I would think that would take the trans out of question.

The only other thing I can think of would be the wheel bearing or the CV joints. I also doubt its the brakes because when the brakes are applied it does not change the noise.

The car only has 37,000miles on it.

Any ideas?

Thanks
-Jeff

Does it have the Goodyear RSA tires ? Believe it or not they make kind of a grinding / rubbing noise at low speeds . If not i'd get the hub bearings checked .

No, it has GoodYear AquaTreads. Maybe it is the bearings, but they should not be bad in 37,000 miles.

You're right, they shouldn't.. but they could be.

its the wheel bearing, its kind of like a buzzing/grind right? that gets louder with your speed? yeah exact same noise happened to my moms 99 alero last winter, it onyl had 38,000 miles on it, which sucked cause we were 2000 miles out of the warranty and it was like $450 cause she got it done at a dealership, but yea id check into the front wheel bearing thing, sounds like that could be it

Thanks guys. I just took the tires off and put the car on jack stands. I put it in drive and let it get to about 30mph, Its still making the noise. So I got out and tried to see if I could hear where it was comming from. I don't think its the wheel bearings, It sounds like its comming from the middle, Maybe the iner part of the CV joint?

The sound it is making is sorta a card against a fan sound. But its deeping sounding then that.

sounds like something is out of balance, COULD be the CV. Check the boots for tears etc.

Im not sure its something out of balance. The car goes down the road nice and smooth. It sounds like its comming from the middle.

Did it fix the problem ? I have an 01 alero with the grinding noise it looks like one side has been done and its got 229,000 k on it and like its loud and yeah as you go faster it gets louder I'm getting the wheel bearing tomorrow, So hope fully that fixes the problem ?
