The wife's 2.4 now has a slight "whirring" sound that
follows the RPMs of the engine. Sounds kinda like a
electric motor (to give it a description). Water pump
and alt were replaced 15-20K miles ago. Any ideas?

I was thinking maybe the tensioner is going to die?
Is it a pain in the butt to replace a tensioner pulley?

Is it a pain in the butt to replace a tensioner pulley? Check the fluid level in your power steering pump , it can make a whirring sound if it's low . Try starting up the engine and use a length of rubber tubing and listen to each component till you hear which one is making the noise .
