the last place i went to get my oil change neglected to tighten it, so when i got my oil changed a week ago the guy called me into the bay and started unscrewing it with his hand...

service manual specs = 18 lb. ft.

tight as you can get it with a wrench with out trying very hard :D

I know how to not overtighten it. I want to correctly tighten it.

I don't see why this would really matter, its a thick bolt that has strong threads that I am pretty damn sure cant too easily be stripped, and im sure you know how tight to make a bolt so it wont come off. Just take the wrench and torque it on there. This isn't like your dealing with delicate bolts of transmission fluid replacement or anything.

you wont strip the bolt. you will strip the oil pan first I would imagine.

The bolt can be stripped. Just tighten it down to where it meshes up against the oil pan, then give it a little 1/3 - 1/2 turn more.

Think you would see the oil pan crush in before u stripped it, or the bolt head just twist off.

The oil pan is pretty beefy right there. You would end up rounding the head, not breaking it off.
