aight so i took the granny in today to get the freon leak fixed and got an $840 estimate to replace the leaking compressor. forget that. so i was thinking i might be able to do it myself, since i do just about everything else in that fashion. i know i have to get a new dryer and such, but i was wonderin if anybody has done this themselves or knows how difficult it is or if its possible without havin absolute knowlege of the a/c system. thanks in advance yall

How to Remove A/C Compressor
1. Before you do this, the air conditioning system is under a lot of pressure. So DO NOT loosen any hose or line fittings or remove any components until after the system has been depressurized by a dealer service department or other repair shop (unless someone knows how to do it themselves). This process is aslo called discharging. Also when doin this you should probably wear eye protection!
2. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. ( if you have the Delco Loc ll anti-theft audio system, then it needs to be disabled and i can tell you how if needed but i'm not goin to type it b/c it's kinda long)
3. Raise the front end of the car with a jack.
4. Remove the right under-vehicle splash shield.
5. Remove the drivebelt. (It might also be necessary to remove the oil filter for more clearance to remove the compressor.
6. Disconnect the compressor clutch electrical connector.
7. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the rear of the compressor. Plug the holes to prevent dirt and moisture from getting in there.
8. Unbolt the compressor from its mounting brackets and lower it from the vehicle. If you can't find the bolts I can put a picture up.
Installation
1. With the new compressor, follow the directions regarding the draining of excess oil prior to installation.
2. The clutch may have to be transfered from the original compressor to the new one.
3. The installtion is the reverse of removal. Replace the O-rings with new ones made specifically for air conditioning system use and lubricate them with refirgerant oil.
4. Then have the system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by the shop that discharged.
So there you thats how you remove and install an a/c compressor! Have Fun!

Hot To Remove The Drier
1. Have the refrigerant discharged at an automovtive place.
2. Have the negative battery disconnected. Jack the front end up and put jackstnads underneath.
3. Remove the right front wheel.
4. Revome the splash shield from under the right side of the vehicle.
5. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the drier and discard the O-ring seals. Then immedialty cap the open fittings to prevent entry of dirt and moisture.
6. Remove the drier mounting bracket-to-chassis bolts.
7. Remove the drier and bracket from the vehicle.
8. Then separate the drier from the bracket.
Installation
1. Install new O-rings on the lines and lubricate them with clean refrigerant oil.
2. Installation then is just the reverse of removal. Just don't remove the sealing caps until you are ready to reconnect the lines.
3. When the new drier is installed, add one fluid ounce of refrigerant oil to the system.
Also due to the tight fit of the drier to the surrounding sheet metal and engine components, make sure that none of the refrigerant lines rub on anything or a refrigerant leak could happen.
4. Have the system evacuated, charged and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
This is what the drier looks like:

i was told my a/c compressor is stock together which is causing a high pitch whinning sound due to the two metals rubbing against each other, but then another tech told me it isnt the a/c compressor? what the hell is it? i can see it when i look down into behind the radiator/cooling fan. when i turn the a/c off, it whines, then i turn it back on, it stops?

Anyone know how much oil to put in the compressor? I tried to measure the old one but only a few drops came out.

I heard the A/C Compressor was two metal plates with the stupid thing in the middle...one of my plates was super super loose and it made a noise that sounded like a bell orchestra every time I started it for like 6 months...Sears thought it was my serpentine belt but then again, they didn't see oil in my coolant resevoir from my cracked intake manifold either :wtf So I had to get a whole new compressor...got it 2 days before I totalted it lol but it was nice to have a quiet drive for 2 days...I didn't get it charged either because I didn't realize that would have cost another 100 or so. Oh well...I figured that's what the sunroof was for. Still, if it wasn't still snowy when I had compressor probs, this would have been extremely helpful, ty

does the compressor need any Lubrication prior to installation? I will be using an "Ebay" compressor with 35k miles.

I cant see the pic of the drier.
I dont understand how to get the compressor out. I would have to take off my front header just to get it out.

compressor should fall down and go out the passengers side wheel well.....
it is under the headers... no need to remove the header..
