Starting problem...need help fast!

I was taking out the center console and the key was set in the ON position but it wasnt acutally started. The car was in "D" so i could pull the console out and my foot was on the brake. I was pulling on the console (forgetting the key was still in ignition) and then the key popped out while the car was in the ON position. I freaked, put the car into park and turned the car off. When i put the key back in, it would go all the way in like normally. The key doesnt turn now and the car wont start. Im just wondering waht i did. When the key is in and the dorr is open, it still chimes. Did i break something or is this some kind of saftey thing???

The car wont start so i need help FAST!!

update
ok, the CAA guy came and got the car to start (after ALOT of fiddling) but now you can pull the key out of the ignition while the car is STILL ON!
damn i hate this car

Dude, my old Explorer did that. I'd pull my key out and lock the doors, leaving it running in the dead of winter while I ran inside a store or something. It can actually be quite nice sometimes. :)
