I bought my GAGT in the fall of 1998. I had just recieved a nice chunk of money and I really wanted something new. So I traded in my Grand Prix and with the cash I had gotten I bought my 99 GAGT1 with cash. It was the first time I bought a New car with cash and it was real Blast.... The problem was the color I wanted Green and there was only mostly RED. So the Dealer found me a Black one and I've been happy ever since... My company sent me to Asia for a few months to work. I parked my New 99 in the Garage and flew to Asia. About 3 weeks into the trip I got a call from my neighbor, someone had broken into my house and also stole my car. Fortuanately they only got about 5 blocks away because they turned the corner to
fast and ran into the curve completely snapping the right front wheel from the car.
I came home got it put it in the shop and after painting and repairs near $8k .. It was back again good as new. I had no problems other than regular maint. until I hit
125000 miles. I had to replace the Alternator. We rode smooth again until 140,000
miles where I had to replace the Water Pump. Then at 155,000 I had to replace a Gasket that was letting Oill leak into my Coolant over $800.00 for that one. Now last month my Black wonder car is down again after logging 230,000 miles. The Transmission has to be replaced. The dealer is quoting me $3200.00 for the job and also telling me that I need front wheel bearings and a lower gasket in the engine replaced because it's leaking coolant. The entire cost $4100.00 . Well Buddys I'm just considering replacing the Trans and Engine too. There's nothing wrong with the Body or Electricals yet. But according to the Mech.'s at the Dealer ship they call my GAGT1 the wonder mobile. By the way, when I first got it I raced
a brand New Accura RSX one night. I got the car according to the Speedo to reach
138 MPH ... Has anyone else done this? Also I kicked his Butt good Hahahaha
Oh how did I log so many miles. I work Grave yard shift and comute 175 miles round trip each day of work. My friends they are almost all Highway miles with an average speed of 80 MPH .... Wish me luck and if anyone knows what new Engines cost let me know ...

I was on Highway 880 nearing Hayward Calif. I'ts flat and straight as a arrow there. I was already cruising at about 90. The two of us had been blasting up to 120 for about at least 25 miles or so. When the way was opened we both hit it. By the way this is now 2000 not 1999.
His car was brand new and said RSX on the back. I believe they were 160-165 HP then until they came out with the RSX Type S later. The only thing I had modified at that time was the K&N Filter which really only works on the top end and a really noisy exhaust I tried which I removed and put the stocks back on later. But they certainly made a difference. The engine pulled to 125 then ran out of breath.... took a second then down shifted again and went to about 130 or so.... repeated taking the breath again then down shifted and pulled to 137.
Then it was at red line. The RSX was two cars behind. And that's the truth.....

Like I said before the RSX didnt come out till 2002 the Integra was still around in 2000!!!!!

and GA's are speed limited to 127 thats the truth...

Maybe your thinking Integra or you've got your year mixed up with the story.

Ummm....The fastest the GA will go stock is 122MPH. I have gotten mine to do that about 6 times now. Not that hard. Gov. kicks in and doesn't let it go any faster. The 99s were the same weren't they???

Also, for the amount of $$ you are putting into that car, it def is not worth it. I would never spend that much for a transmission to be installed and stuff unless its brand new. But again, I would just rebuild the one I got and make it bulletproof.

It's your car though. I smell BS with the 138MPH though. Unless you had a chipped car or the 99s didnt have a gov, which I doubt.

GAGT's will hit 130 in the BEST of conditions (downhill on the freeway) NEVER has a GA hit 138MPH.......

You need someone else to race with to compete. I was doing it for ****s and giggles. Anyways.....even going downhill, you will need a big hill to give you plenty of room to go fast and stop.

140 mph that must have been some hell of a hill!

Man you guys just want to beat an old guy up huh? ;o) Well I went and spoke with some of my other GM driving Buddies. I have one Bud who has a Chevy SS that is really Juiced UP... We spoke again about that night because he was with me. He said that it was a GS - R because like you said RSX didn't come out until 02 ... I don't pay much attention to non American Aluminum and Iron ;o) . Then we spoke of the Speedo, We both saw it go to 137. It did not stop at 127, but maybe the Speedo was wrong... It could have malfunctioned. One thing I noted about my GAGT was that it was not the fastest off the line. I noted that when rolling at Highway speeds of 60 or better. A good push on the Acelerator and you're hauling it. Driving on California Freeways are dangerous and can be KOOL at times. But there have been many occasions where other's in Quick Cars (I considered my GA Quick not fast remember I used to have an old school GTO) Mitsubishi's etc would pull the old you can't get in front of me etc.... Well in the first two and half years that GAGT did me proud. But I had sense eough to leave the guys rollin in 8's alone. Other than putting in a K&N filter, high performance plugs & wire set and a better exhaust (HP 175 to 188) I did nothing more. When I get my money together, I'll replace that sick tranny. By the way, it didn't whine at all before it started siezing up. It just broke all at once. I'll look to replace the Engine too. A few years ago there was an after market manufacturer who offered both Turbo's and Supercharger for the GAGT but I for got the URL. So when I replace the Tranny and Engine I'm going to play around and see just how fast I can get it to go. I was told by a friend who works at GM that our run of Grand AM would be the last of it's kind in 02. Also that Pony cars would be phased out and the replacement for them would be the next generation Grand AM which I believe is the G6 GTP. Also the platform to replace the Sun fire will be based on the Chevy Cobalt. Which has a 200 HP SS version coming out. Lot's of things are going on. Will I buy a G6? I'm waiting to see it.... But in the mean time I love that Black GAGT1 that I affectionately name Oynx....

AThomas claimed 140+ but when people called BS he retracted his statement admitting it was a lie.

As a Grand Am owner for years and years now, I can tell you- Both my 2000 and 2003 would just touch the 130 hash mark on the same downhill on northbound I-75 near the Palace of Auburn Hills. (Great downhill!) At 130 you are just about hitting the RED RMP range in high gear and the car has nothing left.

It could. I just think it would need a taller last gear (correct term??). Anyways, I'm not calling anyone a lier...ok I did say BS, but no LIER lol. Anyways, if you claim it went that fast, then apparently it went that fast (maybe).

Lilred96gagt

Taller last gear and a flashed computer would help. I had mine flashed and was able to get 129mph out of it. Now keep in mind I own a 1996 GAGT that was governed @ 108 mph. It was flashed on June 22nd 2003 and the guys at Bradley Pontiac in Ann Arbor set it back to stock when they replaced my clutch. Fast work on the replacement but should have left the copmputer alone. That pi$$ed me off.
