How much can a Grand Am GT tow?

I wouldn't tow anything bigger than a jet ski or a small garden trailer. The trans just won't hold, and the brakes aren't strong enough to stop anything heavier.

Could it tow 1,500 lbs safely with an trans cooler added on?

It can't tow 1,500lbs? It seems 200hp would be enough to tow 1,500lbs. The manual states it can tow, but it doesn't say how much it can tow safely.

I wouldnt tow anything. Look at a GA. Does it look like it is meant for towing? I dont think so. MAYBE a jetski. Its crossed my mind also. But it dont seem smart to me.

I've launched a 15 foot boat using my 3300, and the guy I bought the car from pulled 2 jetskis to the beach (2 hours) a few times every summer for 9-10 years.

Rated to tow 1000lbs...but do so at your own risk.

If it is rated to tow 1000lbs and you do tow with your car "properly" and something breaks....is that covered by factory warenty?

I won't be towing, I am just curious.

I pulled a 4 wheeler with my 3300 for 2 years before I put the kit on, and it pulled it easily. Gotta love the 3300, but gotta hate the tranny. lol

Everywhere I looked listed the towing capacity as 454lbs. I've pulled a small U-haul trailer from South Carolina to Oklahoma a couple times with my Beretta and it did fine...

our awd chevy venture has the same 3400 sfi engine and tows our 1500 lb boat. now we have abs problems. im not sure if its the same tranny or not. i wouldnt do anything over 1000 lbs total on a grand am.

I don't think it's the HP as much as it is how that HP is transferred to the wheels.

The tranny would be the issue, that and as mentioned before, the brakes.

If it were me, I would find a pickup or SUV for frequent towing and leave the fun cruising and daily driving for the GT.

Let's just say... Its better to be towed than to tow. ;)

Ive pulled my jetski from mass all the way top North Conway NH. up mountains, and all that good stuff. just put the tranny in 3 and dont go over like 60. you'll be fine. I did this every weekend last summer so I know it can handle it. just be ready for your car to drive you. I felt like i was all over the road. good luck.

That would be the tounge weight. The actual weight that sits on the trailer ball. Oh yeah good luck finding a trailer hitch if it is for a 99+. I had to drive 5 hours to the only uhaul in new england that had the trailer hitch. :jackson

Hey :rtfm. I was looking the book over last night and hit this topic. And there is a sticker on the driver door with that info on it. Max tow weight is about 1000 pounds (your amount is on the sticker). But the sticker value is counting the driver weight, passengers, trunk items. Anything that is not stock (like bolt on coolers). There is also a GVMR wieght. Don't exceed that on the rear axle (including the trunk).

Per the manual - Yes-kinda. The book states it the other way. If you exceed the poundage this will void the warranty and could break critical parts that would not be covered.

wow I packed for a week with two big coolerz full of liquid refreshments, A huge duffle bag 1 for me & 1 for my g/f. I had no trouble at all pulling the jetski along behind up to the mountains. Oh well trailer hitch wouldnt fit on over the new slp exhaust, and I havent gotten around to modifying it yet. SO I dont have to worry about that right now.
