On the way to work today my 97 GAGT stalled (I was accelerating up the ramp and then the engine instantly died. no clunking, ticking, or anything) on the on-ramp to the highway and would not start again. (clicking from dash). battery seems real low. step on brake pedal and all power dies.

drove perfect until the stall. no warnings.

whats going on?

Well he said he loses power when pushing the brake. That would signal to me that the alt is dying and can't keep up with supplying power....it then goes to the battery....that would be a reason on why the battery is weak.

I guess I'll try an Alt. any other ideas?

I would test the battery first - it sounds like its toast. Does your car have a voltmeter?

no voltmeter, but I do have a handheld. the car won't start to be able to check the alt or battery though

Dont need to start the car to check the batter voltage. Just touch the pos and neg terminals. A low reading on the battery doesnt mean the alternator is good. It could just mean the alternator wasnt charging the battery and it died. Replacing the battery while keeping a faulty alternator will just make the car run for awhile until the new battery drains. Jump start the car then get a voltage reading across the battery.

One of the weird things that happened when the towtruck got there, was that we could not shift out of park. the auto shift console was locked. the truck driver had to call one of his buddys to find the hidden manual unlock.

like 2dambad said, don't just throw parts at it. You need to do a load test on the battery, and also test the alternator.

Quick & Easy:
- w/ the tester on the battery, try to start the car. If the battery dips to around 8 or 9 volts - its toast.
- if you get the car running, put the tester on the battery. If its only reading ~12 volts, the alternator isn't charging. (it should read ~14 volts w/ a properly working alternator if I'm not mistaken).

btw, I'm not sure if its an electrical servo that unlocks the gear shift - it could be related to your dead electrical system.

Does the 97 have the passlock anti-theft garbage or whatever it's called?

OK..it was just an alternator. found a rebuilt from a reputable shop for $55. 4 hours later, it works great!
